Hallowed Concepts expansion is what Risk of Rain 2 needed

Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts expansion has nailed it
Industry

There's a new reason for players to return to Petrichor V in Risk of Rain 2. The Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts expansion was released on October 8, 2026, and it introduces a plethora of content to the game. The Halloween-themed expansion adds two playable survivors, new stages, dangerous enemies, as well as an expanded item pool. It has already made an impression on Steam, earning a Very Positive user-review rating and positioning itself among the best-sellers shortly after release.

Two New Survivors, New Stages, Enemies, and Bosses Expand Petrichor V

If Survivors of the Void expanded the game with one playable character, Hallowed Concepts introduces Enforcer and Acolyte, two survivors with significantly different combat styles. Enforcer specialises in defence, using his Steel Protection shield to block incoming attacks and parry dangerous projectiles. His Shield Tackle lets him charge into enemies, while Rally Point deploys a defensive beacon that grants a barrier to help protect nearby teammates. Meanwhile, Acolyte takes a more aggressive approach at combat by wielding a glaive for melee combos and using ranged attacks against distant targets. Her distinctive health-management system allows her to build a reserve from healing and certain health losses, which she can reclaim when needed. She also generates conviction to power devastating attacks connected to N'kuhana. Mastering her abilities requires effort but it's quite rewarding. Together, the two survivors offer fresh strategies for tackling the game's increasingly difficult encounters.

The expansion sldo adds three new standard stages, alongside trial stages that provide additional challenges. Players will also encounter three new enemies, three new bosses, and a new elite enemy type. Six new interactables expand environmental gameplay, including the Wake stage event. The N'Tormat, a new Curio associated with the expansion's mysterious world, is another interesting addition. New survivor skins and hidden secrets give completionists additional reasons to explore the updated environments. These additions have been very welcomed, particularly by veterans who have already mastered the base game's familiar stages and enemy patterns.

When it comes to character customization, Hallowed Concepts introduces 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed Items, and three additional standard items, expanding the possibilities for creating powerful survivor builds. Hexes add a new layer of risk and reward to item collection. Rather than automatically treating every new power as an upgrade, players must consider its effects and potential drawbacks. Choosing the wrong combination could undermine an otherwise effective build, while experimenting with different effects may unlock new strategies. These additions provide more ways to experiment and refine your approach at the game.

The DLC also features new music, including contributions from composer Stavros Markonis and Nando Garza. The soundtrack complements the expansion's unsettling themes and helps distinguish its new environments. Additional secrets and discoveries reward players willing to explore beyond the main objectives. Combined with the new stages and trial challenges, these elements give returning players more content to uncover after launch.

A Free Update Added New Survivor Abilities

Not every addition requires purchasing Hallowed Concepts. The developer studio has released a free update accompanying the expansion. It introduces new abilities for six existing survivors. Commando receives Sabotage, Huntress gains Laser Cyclone, Acrid gets Cloying Breath, Artificer unlocks Tectonic Blast, Engineer receives Laser Cutter, and REX gains Proliferation. Each ability has its own unlock condition.

The update also introduces an optional Karma system that makes the final confrontation on the moon more challenging. Balance adjustments, gameplay improvements, and bug fixes round out the release, with changes affecting the base game and previous expansions. You can check out all the changes in the free patch here

The content in Hallowed Concepts is accessible to all players in co-op multiplayer. As long as one player in the lobby owns the expansion, its monsters, stages, and items will appear for all players in the session. However, players without the DLC cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its new items, logbook entries, and other expansion-specific content.

For players who have already exhausted their favourite builds in Risk of Rain 2, the DLC provides plenty of new combinations to test and challenges to overcome. And with the accompanying free update adding new abilities to six existing survivors, even those who skip the expansion have something new to try.
