Steam is giving away the 2016 indie hit Pony Island for a limited time

Steam users can grab another game for their libraries without spending a cent, as Daniel Mullins' Pony Island is currently available to claim for free. The giveaway runs until October 12, giving players just a few days to experience the unusual indie title before the offer expires.

The promotion was announced during the latest Triple-i Initiative showcase, which featured around 45 minutes of indie game announcements and trailers. Pony Island is one of the more notable surprises, especially with its sequel now on the horizon.

Released in 2016, Pony Island helped establish Mullins as a developer known for turning familiar game concepts into something far stranger than expected. While many players will recognize the creator for Inscryption, their earlier release deserves attention in its own right. Pony Island has earned an 85 rating on OpenCritic, while 94% of Steam user reviews are positive.

Despite its cheerful name, Pony Island is far from a conventional pony game. It describes itself as a suspenseful puzzle experience in which players become trapped inside an arcade machine created by the Devil. What follows is a short but inventive adventure that plays with expectations and gradually reveals what's really happening beneath its seemingly innocent exterior.

The giveaway also arrives at a convenient moment for anyone curious about the upcoming sequel. Pony Island 2: Panda Circus is scheduled to launch on April 27, 2027, and a new trailer shown during the Triple-i Initiative offered another look at its genre-bending gameplay. Claiming the original is an easy way to get acquainted with Mullins' distinctive style before the follow-up arrives.

To keep Pony Island permanently, simply add it to your Steam library before October 12. Once claimed, it remains yours even after the promotion ends. There are more freebies available elsewhere, too. The Epic Games Store is currently giving away Out of Sight and TerraScape until October 15, so PC players have another opportunity to expand their collections while these limited-time offers last.
