For Honor is now free on Ubisoft Store, and you can keep it forever

Ubisoft is giving PC gamers another chance to jump into For Honor for free, with the medieval fighting game available to claim and keep permanently as part of the publisher's 40th anniversary celebrations. The giveaway runs for almost two weeks, giving players plenty of time to add the game to their Ubisoft Connect library.

Released a decade ago, For Honor has built its identity around competitive third-person melee combat, bringing together warriors from several different factions. Players can choose from Knights, Samurai, Vikings, Wu Lin, Outlanders, and more, with each group offering its own weapons and fighting styles. Matches range from intense 1v1 duels to larger 4v4 battles where teamwork becomes just as important as individual skill.

Although For Honor takes place in a fictional world, much of its combat draws inspiration from real historical weapons and fighting techniques. The game's Art of Battle system is what really sets it apart from a traditional hack-and-slash fighter, allowing players to deliberately choose attack and defense directions rather than simply mashing buttons. Reading an opponent and reacting to their movements is therefore a major part of winning a fight.

The game is also far from being abandoned despite its age. Ubisoft continues to introduce new heroes, maps, modes, and seasonal events, with the latest giveaway arriving alongside the Year 10 Season 3: Blood Hunt update.

That update introduces a new ranked mode designed around more competitive combat, including changes such as the removal of the parry indicator. The ranking system features seven tiers, each containing five divisions, with cosmetic rewards available for players who climb the ladder. Blood Hunt follows the recent arrival of Ranked Dominion, which adds competitive rankings to the existing 4v4 territory-control mode.

Both additions give longtime players new ways to compete while newcomers can jump straight into the action without paying for the base game. There is one important catch for anyone hoping to play on a Steam Deck or another Linux-based system. Ubisoft recently dropped Linux support for For Honor, citing cheating-related concerns, so the free giveaway isn't currently an option for Linux users.

For everyone else, Ubisoft's For Honor promotion is available through September 28.
