Obsidian has focused on storytelling to make Avowed different

Avowed is an upcoming role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment that was revealed back in 2020. The game takes you to a fantasy universe where "you are sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague with a secret that threatens to destroy everything". The game was immediately compared to other big titles in the genre as Obsidian has a long story of successful video games, including titles like Pillars of Eternity, The Outer Worlds, Tyranny, and South Park: The Stick of Truth.

Obsidian released a new Avowed video on the occasion of the Xbox Games Showcase last Sunday. Not only it provides us with a glimpse at the Living Lands where the game is set, it also has been accompanied by the reveal of a release window for the game, which should arrive sometime in 2024.

Some aspects of Avowed will be quite familiar to those that have played Pillars of Eternity or Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, as all three games are set in the world of Eora. Avowed takes quite a different approach to the gameplay, moving away from the more classic style in PoE games which is much closer to classic RPGs like Baldur's Gate.

Storytelling at its best

Obsidian has decided to focus on its strengths to make Avowed stand among its peers. The studio is well known for the narrative of its stories, and it will take advantage of its experience to deliver a game that delivers a deep level of immersion.

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has delved into this matter in a recent interview with PC Gamer:

"I think where Obsidian really shines as an RPG maker is with this really evocative nuanced world building, stories that are more focused on depth and breadth, and really thoughtful quest design that rewards experimentation and exploration from players—that gives them a sense of agency. And that gives them a meaningful set of options with how they interact with the world and characters."

We will still have to wait for a long while until we can get our hands on Avowed, but the game seems to be quite an interesting choice for those RPG fans looking for a deep and immersive adventure.
