Obsidian conforms the release date for Avowed on PS5
Obsidian Entertainment has officially confirmed that Avowed will launch on PlayStation 5 on February 17, 2026, bringing the fantasy RPG to Sony’s platform exactly one year after its debut on Xbox Series X/S and PC. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation and further reinforces Microsoft’s ongoing push toward wider, multi-platform releases for its first-party titles.
The PS5 launch will coincide with a significant free content update, often referred to as the game's anniversary update. This update will be available across all platforms and is designed to meaningfully expand the experience with several additions. Its headline feature is New Game Plus, allowing players to replay the campaign with retained progress while facing tougher encounters. In addition, the update will introduce new playable races, expanded character customization options, a Photo Mode, and extra gameplay tweaks and content intended to enhance replayability.
From a commercial standpoint, Avowed will be offered on PlayStation 5 in multiple editions, including a standard version and a premium edition that bundles cosmetic items and digital extras such as an artbook and soundtrack. Pricing aligns with other major RPG releases, signaling Microsoft's intent to position the game as a full-fledged flagship title on Sony's storefront rather than a secondary port.
Microsoft strikes again
Beyond the game itself, the PS5 release of Avowed is another clear example of Microsoft's evolving publishing strategy. Once defined by strict console exclusivity, Xbox Game Studios has increasingly embraced releasing its titles on competing platforms. Recent examples include several high-profile Xbox-developed games making the jump to PlayStation, a move that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
This shift appears to be paying off. By prioritizing software sales, long-term engagement, and brand visibility over hardware-driven exclusivity, Microsoft is expanding its reach to a much larger audience. For story-driven RPGs like Avowed, whose success benefits from longevity and word-of-mouth rather than short launch windows, access to the PlayStation user base represents a significant growth opportunity.
The game's arrival on PS5, paired with a generous free update, highlights a broader industry trend in which platform holders are rethinking traditional boundaries. Microsoft's willingness to meet players where they are, even on rival hardware, suggests a future where exclusivity is no longer the primary measure of success, and where high-quality games are treated as global products rather than platform-specific assets.
