In conjunction with their Radeon RX 9070 GPU series, AMD introduced the FSR 4 AI upscaling technology. Initially, this upscaler was compatible with “30+” games, and AMD anticipates that by year-end, over 75 games will be compatible. In simple terms, this is insufficient to rival Nvidia's DLSS, an upscaler featured in most contemporary PC releases. Fortunately, OptiScaler comes to the rescue.
OptiScaler (found on Github here) is a utility that enables PC gamers to swap out one upscaler for another. This tool facilitates the replacement of DLSS with FSR or XeSS (and the opposite as well). Now, with support for FSR 4, gamers can leverage AMD’s latest upscaling technology in games that previously did not support it. High Yield has provided a guide on how to activate FSR 4 in Cyberpunk 2077.

The team behind OptiScaler has compiled a “FSR 4 Compatibility List” for users of their tool. Currently, it appears that FSR 4 is not very effective in games utilizing the Vulkan API. However, this situation might change as AMD rolls out newer iterations of FSR 4. Unfortunately, not every game will be compatible with FSR 4 via OptiScaler. Still, it functions well with many popular titles.
By using OptiScaler, FSR 4 can be enabled in games like Amid Evil, Atomic Heart, Avowed, Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon’s Dogma II, The Witcher 3, among several others. Videos from BNCH bench demonstrate the use of this mod in Cyberpunk 2077.
As seen in the videos, FSR 4 enhances the upscaling quality dramatically. In Performance mode, FSR 4 provides superior visuals compared to FSR 3.1 in Quality Mode. The new upscaler reduces aliasing, enhances image clarity, and minimizes visual distortion and blurriness on transparent elements. Overall, FSR 4 greatly improves image quality for users with supported graphics cards.
Keep in mind that OptiScaler should not be utilized in online gaming, as it may activate anti-cheat mechanisms. The primary drawback of FSR 4 is its limited game support in comparison to DLSS. AMD must act quickly to expand FSR 4 support across a wider array of games. By doing so, AMD can diminish the advantage that Nvidia has with DLSS, making their GPUs more attractive to gamers globally. While OptiScaler is a valuable resource, nothing can compare to direct integration of FSR 4 in games. AMD should encourage developers to incorporate FSR 4 into as many titles as possible.
