The Nintendo Switch 2 has received a new system update, bringing it to version 22.0.0. While not a major overhaul, it introduces a helpful new feature called Handheld Mode Boost, which will appeal especially to players revisiting older titles.
This feature improves how backward-compatible Switch 1 games perform on the newer hardware. In simple terms, it allows certain games to run with docked-mode settings while still in handheld mode, leading to better visuals and potentially smoother performance without needing to connect the console to a TV.
It’s important to note that Handheld Mode Boost is not enabled by default and must be turned on manually after installing the update. You can read more about that specific update here. Nintendo explains that results will vary depending on the game - some may see improved clarity or frame rates, while others may show little difference. Since the system is working harder, battery life may also decrease when the feature is active.

This functionality is limited to Switch 1 games running through backward compatibility, meaning titles built specifically for the Switch 2 won’t benefit from it. Early impressions suggest that games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Monster Hunter Rise, and Bayonetta 3 show noticeable visual improvements in handheld mode with the feature enabled.
Because the feature essentially forces docked settings, there are a few quirks to be aware of. Some on-screen prompts may not display correctly, and attached Joy-Con 2 controllers are recognized as a Switch 2 Pro Controller. To use other controllers, the Joy-Cons will need to be detached first.
While not every game will benefit equally, this is still a valuable addition for Switch 2 owners. Even without dedicated upgrades, many Switch 1 titles can now deliver a better handheld experience on the new console - great news for players revisiting older favorites.
