Gameplay

City States: Medieval is an indie strategy hybrid developed by Reverie World Studios and published by indie.io that was released into Early Access on April 20, 2026. Set across 12th-century Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, the game focuses on surviving as an independent city-state between massive neighboring kingdoms.

Unlike traditional grand strategy titles (like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis) that force you to paint the map and build sprawling multi-continent empires, City States: Medieval focuses on a different fantasy: surviving, trading, and thriving as a single merchant city-state in 12th-century Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.3.

Fortify Your Walls Against Brutal Enemy Raids

Economic prosperity quickly draws aggressive attention from rival powers, forcing players to protect their trade networks and urban walls. Combat weaves real-time tactics with high-stakes tower defense mechanics during intense siege warfare. Defensive unit positioning, fortifying supply lines, and managing local garrisons are critical to preventing enemy raiders from plundering accumulated riches.

Tactical choices directly determine whether your trade empire flourishes or suffers crippling economic losses, making defensive military planning every bit as essential as economic expansion throughout every campaign.

Lead Historic Heroes to Ultimate Victory

Command and administration rely heavily on historic heroes who serve as operational backbones for your forces. Deploying a hero away on distant diplomatic or trade missions leaves local cities under restricted authority, adding a crucial layer of risk management.

Whether starting in cold Novgorod or arid Tripoli, players navigate political friction, religious conflicts, and dynamic trade opportunities. Combining deep city building, global commerce, and supply-line defense, the title offers RTS and grand strategy fans a fresh take on medieval merchant republics. The hero mechanic adds an interesting trade-off. Send your hero out for trade and diplomacy but lose control of the city while they are away. Stay home and miss opportunities. Adds real cost to expansion instead of just positive bonuses. That kind of risk management makes each decision matter.
