Magic: Legends will start its open beta soon
Magic: Legends was first mentioned in 2017, when we learned that Perfect World and Cryptic, the developers of Neverwinter, announced that they were working on a new project on the Magic: The Gathering license. Although the name Magic: Legends was not confirmed at the time, the game was presented as an MMORPG set in the world of the famous and timeless card game.
Magic: Legends wasn't really showed until the 2019 Game Awards, where we got to see the first video presentation of the game, which revealed that the game would revolve around planeswalkers. The reveal disappointed many players, not because the game didn't look good but because Magic: Legends was an action-RPG instead of an MMORPG as many of the fans of the license expected. The development of the game has progressed steadily and several alpha phases available to a limited number of players have taken place since then. The developers recently announced that as many as 100,000 players have tried Magic: Legends and that number will increase dramatically in the near future.
Indeed, if you were not selected to participate in the alpha phases, an open beta has been announced for March 23, 2021. It will be available only on PC, and it will be a very good opportunity to try Magic Legends ahead of its launch, which should be happening later this year on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Several aspects of the gameplay, such as the progression system, have already been modified thanks to these testing phases and some new features have been added, like an equipment system. The duration and content of the upcoming beta are not yet known, but the content added since the start of the alpha phases seems quite substantial already. Finally, we were also able to discover more things about the game in the video below, which has been published by IGN and shows the deck building system in Magic: Legends.
