Magic: Legends is closing down this fall
It's been a very short life for the latest game based on the popular collectible trading card game Magic: The Gathering. Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios have just announced that Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31, 2021. Things do not seem to be going as well as expected and players do not share their vision of the MTG universe. As a result, the game, which was intended to be a live service that would constantly receive updates and additional content, will come to an end in just a few months. It's a rather sad thing, especially if we consider the game was still on its beta stage. Executive producer Steve Ricossa's publication on Twitter leaves very clear the reasons behind the cancelation:
"Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established ARPG genre."
Magic: Legends is not a bad game per se, but it's true that an action RPG inspired by the Magic: The Gathering universe is probably quite far from what the fans of the card game expected. There are several video games that have achieved a moderate success while being based on the collectible card game, but all of them offered an experience quite similar to it, with deckbuilding, and matches following the same mechanics. Meanwhile, Magic: Legends has tried to fuse deck building with ARPG mechanics, but without much success. The game was intended to be free-to-play and, even though its monetization system may not be appealing to many players, the fans of MTG are quite used to pay for their cards.
Whatever the case is, Magic: Legends has not managed to convince, and therefore is being shut down. You can still play the game until the end of October, and all players who have purchased any in-game item will get a full refund.
