Halo: Campaign Evolved Embraces Unreal Engine 5
Microsoft has officially announced the release date for Halo: Campaign Evolved, which is upcoming on July 28, 2026. The game is going to be a media blockbuster, firstly because it will continue the main storyline in the game's, and secondly because Microsoft has officially announced breaking the exclusivity boundaries of the Halo franchise, as well as the developer utilizing the power of Unreal Engine 5! Let's check out the hot news!
A historic multi-platform release on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5
This information was officially locked in on July 28, 2026, at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Halo has been an inherently exclusive franchise, defining the identity and success of the Xbox gaming console brand for the past 25 years.
Microsoft officially bringing Halo: Campaign Evolved to PlayStation 5, right on day one of its launch, is an unprecedented move, proving to the world that Xbox's latest strategy is prioritizing software revenue and maximizing player base reach rather than stubbornly holding onto hardware exclusivity.
The game will have two releases: the Standard Edition and the Premium Edition (which includes the Alpha Halo Armory weapon/armor pack, a digital artbook, a short story, and 5 days of early access privileges starting from July 23, 2026).
Not only that, but the game has also undergone a massive overhaul, as the developer changed the studio's name and transitioned to using Unreal Engine 5! The announced their roadmap in late 2024 at the Halo World Championship tournament, before officially being realized through the gameplay of this remake.
First, after a period of receiving mixed reviews with Halo Infinite, Microsoft resolutely changed the entire leadership structure, work culture, and the name of the studio, with the goal of shifting players' perspectives on the Halo game, as well as bringing a completely new chapter to this franchise!
In addition to changing the aspects mentioned above, the developer also phased out the Slipspace Engine. Previously, Microsoft had to maintain and develop this "homegrown" toolset itself, an effort that consumed half of the studio's workforce with just one single mission: fixing bugs and upgrading the Slipspace engine. This caused the game development speed and content updates for gamers to slow down significantly!
Therefore, Halo Studios created an internal research project called Project Foundry to test bringing the Halo universe onto Unreal Engine 5. The results were extremely impressive, as the engine helped them smoothly handle the details of Master Chief's armor, the light reflection effects on the icy surface of the Coldlands snow region, or the gloominess of the Blightlands.
Switching to the new tool, Unreal Engine 5, not only helps the graphics of Halo: Campaign Evolved reach next-generation standards, but it also helps the studio easily recruit talented personnel (since Unreal Engine is the industry standard) and allows them to operate multiple teams to work on multiple Halo projects at the same time in the future.
