AMD offers new insight into FSR “Redstone” before its major unveiling

FSR Redstone update arrives Dec. 10, adding AI ray tracing and new FG tools

AMD has officially announced its highly anticipated "FSR Redstone premiere" event, which is set to take place on December 10th. The company has confirmed that "new FSR Redstone features" will be launched simultaneously with the event, signaling a major update to its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology.

These new performance and visual enhancements are scheduled to "arrive" on December 10th. Crucially, AMD has indicated that these features are specifically designed for the new Radeon RX 9000 series (RDNA 4) graphics cards. This focus suggests that official support for older RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 GPUs, which power many existing PC gaming rigs, is now "increasingly unlikely."

AMD has previously unveiled four key FSR "Redstone" technologies: Neural Radiance Cache, Ray Regeneration, ML Super Resolution, and ML Frame Generation. These features, along with the potential for unannounced technologies, are expected to be the focus of the December showcase. A new teaser slide has provided clarification on implementation, confirming that developers integrating FSR Redstone into their games do not need to utilize the full feature set. Instead, they can selectively choose which features to implement. This modular approach mirrors Nvidia's strategy with DLSS and is intended to encourage broader adoption by eliminating an "all-or-nothing" implementation barrier.

The adoption of these technologies is already visible in the gaming landscape. Ray Regeneration is currently available in the title Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and ML Frame Generation is confirmed to be included in a future update for the same game.

Beyond PC gaming, these AI-driven features are also expected to have a profound impact on the console market. Given AMD's deep collaboration with Sony on "Project Amethyst," these new AI features are widely anticipated to form the core graphical technology for the planned PlayStation 6 console. This makes FSR Redstone a foundational element that is poised to define the visual capabilities and look of the next generation of games.

PC gamers can expect to receive comprehensive details and technical specifications on FSR 4 "Redstone" and its impact on the future of gaming on December 10th.
