Everything We Know about Far Cry 6

Everything We Know about Far Cry 6

With Far Cry 6 coming out tomorrow, it won’t be long before the island nation of Yara opens its doors to all players and allowing us a closer look at a country on the brink of revolution, with you lighting the first spark.

First off, take a look at the Far Cry 6 trailer here.

The Far Cry 6 Story

The Far Cry 6 trailer tells us quite a bit about where the game is set. The fictional Caribbean island of Yara is inspired mainly by Cuba, complete with waterfalls, verdant jungles, and exotic wildlife. It’s also a place teeming with civil unrest, violent revolutionaries, and the soldiers of a totalitarian regime.

You play Dani Rojas (voiced by either Sean Ray as male or Nisa Gunduz as female), a former soldier turned revolutionary leader after witnessing the brutality of the Yaran regime. Your actions will impact how Dani views the events in Yara and how it relates to characters from other factions. This is important, as the revolutionary groups in the island nation don’t necessarily see eye to eye.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Far Cry without another iconic villain. This time, we are introduced to “El Presidente” Antón Castillo, played with malevolent aplomb by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito. In the trailer, he takes his 13-year-old son, Diego, to the roof of his headquarters, telling him how their people “do not know how to be happy” and are being “strangled by their freedoms” while handing him a live grenade to test his understanding. In other words, typical dictator stuff. You’ll be living a dangerous life as you launch a revolution against this despot.

Far Cry 6 Gameplay

Far Cry 6 gameplay is mainly similar to the previous installments of the series with several additional features.

Blending In

Firstly, you can now holster your weapon to blend in with the crowd like an ordinary citizen, a handy feature in the capital city of Esperanza. In the past, just being seen by an enemy in Far Cry will quickly escalate into a firefight. But holstering your weapon means that you won’t immediately attract attention from your foes—a mechanic that makes perfect sense in a real-world scenario. Of course, get too close to an enemy or get caught someplace you shouldn’t, and you’ll quickly be trading bullets with your new friends.

Changing Gears

Another vital mechanic to remember is that perks are now tied to your clothes and gear. For example, if you wish to maximize your abilities as a sniper, you would wear sniper gear. If you prefer stealth, you would choose camouflage gear, and so on.

Weapon mechanics have also seen some changes. You can now upgrade your weapons with attachments and mods. You also get a special weapon class called “Resolvers,” improvised armaments that need to be constructed from parts collected through your adventure. Examples include a mini-gun, a flame thrower, and, oddly enough, a launcher that hurls CDs while playing Macarena.

Another new weapon class is the Supremo, superweapons that act like ultimate abilities during combat, as shown below:

  • Fantasma - Venom Salvo: emits a poison gas cloud that can make your enemies fight among themselves
  • Gladiador - Juice Injector – raises your speed and health and lets you go on a machete-swinging rampage
  • Triador - Truesight – enables you to find enemies in cover and lets you shoot them through walls with the La Virata rifle
  • Exterminador - Armaggeddon Strike – launch a barrage of homing rockets on enemies
  • Volta - El Impulso – discharges an EMP to disrupt electronics and knockdown enemies
  • Furioso - Fuego Loco – creates a wall of fire and gives an extra boost with jumps
  • Medico - Zona Medicina – heals you and your allies over time

Getting around Yara

Far Cry 6 will feature an enormous map featuring a country with mountains, beaches, jungles, islands, and urban areas. While Far Cry 5 made do with small towns with a few large buildings, this new game will feature an enormous capital city and several small towns dotting the landscape. You’ll encounter a lot of wildlife, featuring exotic birds and rivers teeming with crocodiles.

Instead of a quest marker on a map, on some quests, you will be required to look for crucial places using a picture on your mobile device. This gives a kind of treasure hunt mechanic for finding your way around the island.

Travel won’t be a problem in Yara. You can use a variety of cars, which can be customized and upgraded as you please, and even delivered to your location on command. The significant change is you can now ride a horse to travel the countryside, which is very much in keeping with the setting.

New Amigos

Speaking of animals, Far Cry 5’s Fangs for Hire makes a return in the sequel; this time referred to as Amigos. In previous games, you can take on hired guns to fight for you, but you may only get animals as companions this time around. You can have a rooster named Chicharron who can peck at your enemies, a crocodile named Guapo who will straight-up eat them, a panther called Oluso who can perform silent kills, and Chorizo, a dog in a wheelchair who will dig for items and can be healed through petting.

The urban setting of Esperanza gives players a chance to fight and run on new ground. Now you can use the city’s rooftops to your advantage, much like an Assassin’s Creed game.

According to narrative director Navid Khavari:

"The verticality is a complete game-changer. Being able to run across rooftops, use back alleys, fight against some of the toughest opponents in the game in this setting, I think, is really unique and fresh."

Finally, Far Cry 6 will feature co-op gameplay, though how this will be implemented exactly remains to be seen. In previous installments, you could drive vehicles and fight with a co-player. The gameplay appears to be similar in Far Cry 6, though it’s possible players will get teleported closer to each other if they stray too far apart.
