Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis Announced With New Sequel

As we revealed last week, Crystal Dynamics used the stage of The Game Awards to deliver a major moment for Tomb Raider fans, unveiling Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis alongside the brand-new mainline entry Tomb Raider: Catalyst. The dual announcement signals an ambitious new phase for the long-running franchise, combining a return to its roots with a bold step forward.

The reimagining of an icon

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is not a simple remaster, but a full reimagining of Lara Croft's original 1996 adventure. The developer studio is taking a significantly different approach to the game than what Aspyr did in Tomb Raider I-VI Remastered. The new game is built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, the game aims to modernize the series’ debut while staying faithful to its tone, structure, and sense of discovery. Development is being led by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog.

The game revisits iconic locations from the original story, including the jungles of Peru, ancient Greek ruins, and Egyptian tombs, before leading Lara to a mysterious island tied to the legend of Atlantis. Players will once again pursue the fragments of the Scion, a powerful and dangerous artifact, but with expanded environments, refined traversal, and redesigned puzzles suited to modern gameplay standards.

According to the developers, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis emphasizes exploration, environmental storytelling, and classic Tomb Raider puzzle-solving, enhanced by fluid movement and cinematic presentation. The goal is to preserve the deliberate, adventure-driven pace that defined early Tomb Raider games while delivering visuals and mechanics expected from a current-generation release.

The remake will also introduce a new voice for Lara Croft. Alix Wilton Regan will portray the iconic adventurer in both Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, creating continuity across the franchise’s future titles and offering a fresh interpretation of the character.
