ASUS unveils powerful ROG XG Station 3 external GPU dock for RTX 5090

ASUS’ ROG XG Station 3 aims to bring desktop-class graphics to compact PCs

ASUS has brought its external GPU dock lineup back into the spotlight with the ROG XG Station 3, a new model built around Thunderbolt 5. The enclosure lets users connect desktop graphics cards from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia to compatible laptops and other systems, with support extending to high-end options such as the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX PRO 6000 series.

Thunderbolt 5 is the biggest upgrade over previous generations, offering up to 80 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth. With Bandwidth Boost enabled, throughput can reach 120 Gbps in one direction, providing more room for demanding graphics workloads. The dock remains compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 devices, although Thunderbolt 4 connections are limited to 40 Gbps. A Thunderbolt 5-equipped PC is therefore necessary to get the most out of the enclosure.

Another notable addition is GC-HPWR support, making the XG Station 3 the first model in the ROG XG Station series to accommodate ASUS BTF graphics cards. These GPUs can draw power directly through the dedicated connector, eliminating the need for exposed power cables and creating a cleaner-looking setup.

ASUS has also opted for a modular power design. Rather than including a built-in power supply, the XG Station 3 accepts standard SFX and SFX-L units, allowing owners to choose a PSU that matches their graphics card. This also makes future upgrades easier, as users can replace both the GPU and power supply when moving to more demanding hardware. Neither component is included with the dock.

The enclosure can deliver up to 140W of power to a connected laptop, potentially charging compatible systems while handling external graphics. It also provides a downstream Thunderbolt 5 port capable of supporting up to three 4K displays and delivering up to 36W of power, alongside two USB-C ports with 10 Gbps connectivity.

The launch marks a long-awaited successor to the ROG XG Station 2, which arrived in December 2016 with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity offering up to 40 Gbps. That older model included a 680W 80 Plus Gold PSU, allocating up to 500W to the graphics card and 100W for laptop charging over USB-C. The XG Station 3's interchangeable PSU approach gives users more flexibility than its predecessor.

ASUS has yet to announce pricing or a release date for the ROG XG Station 3, so stay tuned for more details.
