Amerzone returns after 26 years

Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy is a classic adventure game by the famous game designer Benoît Sokal (Syberia series) originally released in 1999. It's considered a cult favorite in the point-and-click genre. In 2024-2025, studio Microïds announced a remake/reimagining titled Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy with modern features.

The return of the Point-and-click Adventure game?

With Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy, players will play as a journalist who visits the home of a dying explorer, Alexandre Valembois, in France. Having heard the last wishes of a late explorer, embodying a journalist seeking adventure and truth in a forgotten Latin American country, Amerzone, where Alexandre Valembois discovered mythical White Birds—a rare species with a magical, cyclical life.

For gameplay-wise, as we can see on the trailer, nothing much has changed from the classic Amerzone—The Explorer’s Legacy (1999), as the game will be focusing on puzzle-solving, journal reading, and environmental exploration with a strong focus on atmosphere and storytelling over action. Moreover, Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy will be a complete remake from the ground up, not just a remaster.

Enhanced with full 3D modern graphics with dynamic lighting, atmosphere, and more immersive environments, reimagined puzzles, improved interactivity, and modern controls. For enhancing storytelling, voice acting, new character development, and additional lore will be added to this remake, but also keeping the original quiet, mysterious adventure vibe from the 1999 version. Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy is confirmed to be released on April 24 for PS5, XBOX SERIES, and PC. 

Benoît Sokal, a Belgian comic book artist turned game designer, was the writer, artist, and creative lead on both Amerzone and Syberia. Amerzone (1999) was his first video game, and it laid the groundwork for the tone, pacing, and narrative style he perfected in Syberia. From studio Microïds's trailer and artwork, we have high hopes that Amerzone - The Explorer’s Legacy will be an introduction to Benoît Sokal's works to the newer, younger gaming community as well as a contribution to his works in the gaming industry.
