Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Closed Beta First Impressions

A Closer Look at Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Beta

The closed beta just wrapped up on the 5th of July for those who pre-ordered the game. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has received positive feedback from the fighting game community. Here are some key features.

Details on the combat & system mechanics and the visuals & netcode under the hood!

The core combat engine of the game is built around the flow button. Instead of a traditional defensive subsystem (like Street Fighter’s Drive Gauge), Avatar Legends requires you to actively manage your Chi to fuel your agility.

At the start of every round, you will start the fight with a completely full Chi meter. Over time, the Chi meter will regenerate depending on the damage you give or receive. Spending Chi allows you to activate universal auto-guards, auto-parries, ground/air dashes, and combo breakers.

When the Chi meter is empty, your character will enter an unbalanced state, temporarily locking you completely out of the Flow mechanics and leaving you incredibly vulnerable to pressure strings.

The game also includes various characters' combat stances. The game's roster at lauch includes 12 characters and emphasizes high mechanical variety, with certain fighters featuring complete archetype shifts mid-match, for example:

  • Azula: Can swap between Focused Mode (highly precise, calculated pokes) and Firelord Mode (overwhelming, aggressive rushdown pressure).
  • Zuko: Dynamically switches his entire moveset between standard firebending techniques and his dual broadsword style.

A closer look at the visuals & netcode behind the gameplay reveals that in order to mimic the visual identity of the television show, every frame of movement in the game has been drawn by hand, with the development team utilizing over 900 custom frames of animation per character.

To keep these dense animations perfectly fluid online across PC and consoles, the game uses a proprietary rollback netcode architecture. Therefore, rather than delaying your button inputs to wait for data from your opponent (delay-based netcode), the engine instantly executes your moves locally and mathematically predicts the opponent's behavior.

If the network data misses or changes, the engine instantly recalculates and "rolls back" the animation frames seamlessly behind the scenes, ensuring competitive matches feel identical to local offline play.

As a result of the information gathered during the closed beta, we can clearly state that Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has the potential to become a big hit this summer. Please make sure to use our comparison tool to pre-order Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game at the cheapest price!

I’m all about motorcycles, retro gaming, and the golden handheld era of the PSP and PS Vita. I love the thrill of the ride just as much as the nostalgia of classic games. I believe games can bring people together, spark creativity, and make the world a little brighter—one adventure at a time.

An Avatar-based FPS? I think that's a fantastic idea. The character design is really beautiful, and the art direction as a whole is great too. Everything looks so smooth. Honestly, I approve and I'm all for it!

I'm particularly interested in the game because of its art style, which really captures the Avatar universe. The animations are fluid, and the elemental effects make the combat very dynamic. The beta looks promising; we'll have to see if the balancing holds up and if each character will have a distinct identity within the game.

The character designs stand out because they are built around distinct playstyles instead of small variations. Fighters that can switch between different movesets during a match add another layer to learning matchups and make the roster feel more varied.
