30XX is a platform action game and a sequel to 20XX. Both the gameplay and graphics closely resembles the classic 8-bit and 16-bit games like Mega-Man, from which it draws its inspiration. Run, shoot and jump your way through 2D worlds and make your way to the boss who is waiting for you at the end of each stage.
There are two playable characters in the game: Nina and Ace. Nina uses long-range attacks and Ace is a close-medium range attacker. The background of the characters is a mystery and there is no real storyline to mention, but that has no big impact on the overall feel of the game itself.
30XX can be played in two different modes: Mega mode and Standard mode. The latter is suitable for hardcore gamers and includes features such as permanent death, random world and boss sequencing, and the powerups that you’ve found throughout the level will disappear upon your death. You do unlock some new upgrades when you defeat bosses, making your next run slightly less difficult. To have a chance in Standard you need to be cautious and patient, and probably do more than a few runs. In Mega mode you’re able to choose the level that you want to play from a starting screen, letting you choose in which order to take down the bosses and you don't lose all of your progress in the process.
