Oddworld: Soulstorm is the sequel to the platform game from 2014 Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty. The game follows the adventures of Abe, a Mukodon slave that originally worked in a meat-producing factory for RuptureFarms. He accidentally discovers that the main ingredient used in the most popular product manufactured by the company is no other than the Mukodons themselves and he eventually manages to escape from the place. Chased as a dangerous criminal by the people of RupturedFarms, Abe is on a mission to free other Mukodons from slavery and prevent their sacrifice before they become food. In Oddworld: Soulstorm, Abe will try to free his people from another factory.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a side-scrolling adventure in 2.5D with modern graphics that also introduces new mechanics to the gameplay that will be added to the ones seen in other games in the series. Abe still uses no weapons and he will have to make use of stealth and his skill to control other people's minds in order to navigate the labyrinthic levels of the facility where his peers are working as slaves. He will have to avoid all kinds of traps and get rid of the nasty guards of the place as he progresses through the different levels. Every time he rescues another Mukodon, they will start to follow him, and keeping all of them safe will be part of his mission if he wants to succeed. Of course, this will only make things harder for him.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does crafting impact the core gameplay loop of Oddworld: Soulstorm, beyond just providing consumables?
Crafting is central to resource management, influencing which areas you can access, how you approach combat, and your ability to rescue Mudokons, directly impacting your score and the game's ending.
Can I progress through the game without engaging with the crafting system, or is it mandatory?
While the core levels are passable without crafting, many areas and rescue objectives will be inaccessible, leading to a much lower completion rate and preventing you from experiencing the full story.
How does the 'Quarma' system specifically change gameplay, and what actions impact it the most?
Quarma, representing your 'good' actions, primarily affects your ending. Rescuing Mudokons and avoiding excessive Mudokon deaths are the primary ways to improve your Quarma. High Quarma unlocks the 'good' ending.
Does the type of crafted item change the gameplay loop, or are they mostly the same?
Yes, crafting offers a variety of items, from offensive tools to stealth aids. Some items are crucial for specific encounters or puzzles, adding depth to strategic choices.
How much impact does 'Chant' have on the gameplay, and when is it essential?
Chant allows Abe to possess enemies, solve puzzles, and control groups of Mudokons. It's essential for combat and level navigation, offering strategic advantages and required for specific story moments.
What is the consequence of failing to rescue a significant number of Mudokons in a level?
Failing to rescue a significant number of Mudokons results in a lower score and impacts your Quarma rating, potentially blocking access to the best ending and certain areas of the game.
How are resources for crafting acquired, and how does that influence the game's pacing?
Resources are scavenged from the environment, and from the pockets of your enemies. Managing resource gathering is key to the gameplay loop, forcing you to explore thoroughly and make tactical choices about which items to craft.
Does the game offer a difficulty setting, and if so, how does that impact the core mechanics?
Oddworld: Soulstorm doesn't feature difficulty settings in the traditional sense, but the level design, resource availability, and enemy behavior provide challenges. High Mudokon rescue rate is more challenging than a low one, and thus offers a 'difficulty' change.
How does the 'Possession' mechanic affect enemy encounters?
Possession allows you to control enemies, turning them against each other or solving puzzles. Mastering possession adds tactical depth to combat encounters and level traversal.
Can crafted items be used repeatedly, or are they single-use only?
Most crafted items are single-use, emphasizing resource management and strategic decisions about when and how to deploy them. Some craftables may have area-of-effect components.
