Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter expands Estelle's epic RPG adventure

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter: Estelle's epic journey continues
Gameplay

The Trails saga is back with one of its most important chapters. Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter continues Estelle Bright's adventure in Liberl, but this time her journey is far more personal. Joshua has disappeared, Ouroboros is making its move, and the kingdom is once again facing a threat that could change everything.

Following the events of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, Estelle has become a senior bracer and should finally have some time to enjoy a little peace. Unfortunately, Joshua has other plans. After revealing a deeply personal secret, he leaves without warning, forcing Estelle to embark on a journey to find the person who has become one of the most important figures in her life.

Estelle sets out across Liberl

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter returns players to the kingdom of Liberl, bringing back familiar locations while expanding the world with new areas, characters and threats. Estelle's search for Joshua initially appears to be a deeply personal mission, but it soon becomes clear that something much larger is happening behind the scenes. The mysterious society Ouroboros has begun operating more openly, while a dangerous conspiracy threatens Liberl. The appearance of a gigantic airship and the mysterious Shining Ring further complicate matters, turning Estelle's search into a much bigger adventure.

This combination of personal drama and a growing supernatural conspiracy is one of the defining elements of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. Estelle is trying to save the kingdom, and she is also trying to understand why Joshua left and whether she can bring him home.

Returning players will find the familiar turn-based combat system intact, but the sequel gives it additional depth. Characters gain access to new Crafts and S-Crafts, while the orbment system once again lets players customize their party and determine which Arts they can use. The game also features a new and interesting mechanic, Brave Rush, which allows characters to link attacks during Quick Battles. It adds another layer of tactical decision-making and gives coordinated attacks greater importance. With more playable characters joining the party, there are also more combinations to experiment with. Choosing the right team and configuring their orbments can make a significant difference when facing tougher encounters.

Liberl has plenty of distractions

Not every problem in Liberl needs to be solved with a sword, staff or devastating S-Craft. Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter expands its collection of activities with additional ways to take a break from the main storyline. Players can go fishing, play poker and cook with their companions, providing some lighter moments between the game's more dramatic story sequences. These activities also contribute to the feeling that Liberl is more than a backdrop for Estelle's adventure.

And if you completed the previous game, there is another reason to bring your old save along. Clear data from Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter can provide bonus items in the sequel, rewarding players who experienced the beginning of Estelle and Joshua's story.

A Bigger Chapter in the Trails Saga

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter offers an experience that is built directly on the characters, relationships and mysteries established in the first chapter while pushing the wider Trails mythology forward. Estelle's search for Joshua provides the emotional core, while Ouroboros and the growing threat to Liberl give the adventure a much larger scope. Combined with expanded combat options, new activities and a world packed with optional content, the sequel gives returning players plenty of reasons to dive back into the series.

For fans of JRPGs, turn-based combat and character-driven storytelling, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter represents a new opportunity to keep exploring the world of the long-running saga.

The reviews for the first remaster were very positive, so there shouldn't be any reason to worry about the quality of this second remaster.

Can you enjoy this remake if you've already played through SC? I can wholeheartedly say yes, as replaying the story again illuminated some plot points for me in ways I hadn't expected. From a storytelling standpoint, even the remake's 3D graphics and voice acting help present key story reveals, shedding additional light on things. Is this game worth playing if you're a relative newcomer to the Trails series? Absolutely, especially if that newcomer has prior FC or 1st Chapter knowledge! In that regard, this game is easily the best of both worlds and a shining example of how a remake can offer something new while maintaining what made the original so special to begin with. I'm extremely grateful that I got to return to Liberl with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, especially knowing how the Trails series in general evolves from here!
