Switch 2 may lose Variable Refresh Rate feature when played on TV

One of the most notable specs of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is its support for advanced visual technologies like HDR and VRR. However, a recent update on Nintendo's official websites for the U.S. and Canada has unexpectedly removed mention of VRR when the console is used in docked mode, raising doubts about the feature’s inclusion in the final release.

Interestingly, the UK version of the site still lists VRR support, leading to skepticism among users and industry analysts. Nintendo has not yet issued an official statement regarding the change.

If confirmed, the lack of VRR in docked mode could negatively impact the user experience—especially when gaming in 4K, where VRR helps synchronize frame rates and reduce screen tearing and stuttering. A technical theory suggests VRR may be incompatible with signal conversion from DisplayPort 1.4 (used by the handheld) to HDMI (used by the dock).

On the bright side, handheld mode appears to retain VRR functionality through Nvidia G-SYNC support over internal DisplayPort connection.

Another point of contention involves Nintendo’s decision not to support cloud saves for two major titles: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. While players can transfer save data from an older Switch, they won’t be able to back up these specific games to the cloud, even with a premium Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
