Space Grunts: Chrono Shard – Frantic Roguelike Action

Space Grunts: Chrono Shard Is a High-Speed Roguelike Gem

Do you want to play as a member of an elite special forces unit fighting a living entity called The Ooze? Then let's explore a brand-new game with us: Space Grunts: Chrono Shard!

The perfect combination of turn-based tactical thinking and explosive arcade energy

Developed by Orangepixel (famous for retro pixel games like Meganoid) and published by HandyGames, Space Grunts: Chrono Shard is  an action/strategy RPG with roguelikeand turn-based mehcanics and a colorful 2D retro pixel style.

The game is set in deep space, where a living entity called The Ooze is devouring the galaxy by hijacking and teleporting through the HyperGates space portal network. Players will take on the role of a member of the elite Space Grunts special forces, dropped into "time bubbles" to close these HyperGates, destroying biological monsters (and the zombies they create) to stop the Ooze from spreading.

The core mechanism of the game is the time loop (Chrono Loop). Players possess a device called the Chrono Shard that allows them to rewind time when defeated. Notably, the items you placed or the changes you made to the environment in the previous timeline will remain in the same position for the next attempt, helping you leave equipment for your "future self." However, the Chrono Shard will consume energy with every move and needs to be recharged at teleportation stations.

Although it is a turn-based game where enemies only move and attack after you take action, the game does not have slow control menus. Instead, it features a very fast-paced gameplay design, requiring good mental reflexes and decisiveness.

With a detailed crafting system, the game allows you to invest in 3 main skill branches to unlock specialized sub-classes such as Sniper, Assassin, Hitman, Hardened, Elite, Engineer, Gadget, Gearhead, and Veteran.

Space Grunts: Chrono Shard also features randomized environments. The maps of space stations and lunar bases are entirely procedurally generated after each run, bringing a fresh experience filled with toxic surprises.

Currently, as the game has just been released, the number of reviews is still small. However, the initial reviews are all positive, with comments noting that the game is accessible, highly entertaining, suitable for quick play sessions, and most importantly, it perfectly captures the signature spirit and quality of developer Orangepixel.

Overall, if you are a fan of developer Orangepixel, or if you are simply looking for a "pick-and-play" game, this will be an excellent choice for you! Remember to use our comparison tool to buy Space Grunts: Chrono Shard at the cheapest price!

I’m all about motorcycles, retro gaming, and the golden handheld era of the PSP and PS Vita. I love the thrill of the ride just as much as the nostalgia of classic games. I believe games can bring people together, spark creativity, and make the world a little brighter—one adventure at a time.

Le concept du Chrono Shard est vraiment malin. Le fait de pouvoir laisser des objets à son "moi du futur" apporte une vraie dimension stratégique, bien plus intéressante qu'un simple système de respawn
The Chrono Shard concept is truly ingenious. The ability to leave items for your "future self" adds a real strategic dimension, far more interesting than a simple respawn system.

The random maps and different skill paths should help with replay value, but it also feels like it could get a bit samey after a while depending on how much variety the game actually manages to throw at you.

O pixel art de Orangepixel sempre teve muita personalidade. É bom ver um estúdio mantendo sua identidade e oferecendo uma nova mecânica de jogabilidade em vez de simplesmente refazer a mesma receita
Orangepixel's pixel art has always had a lot of personality. It's good to see a studio maintaining its identity and offering a new gameplay mechanic instead of simply remaking the same formula.
