Capcom reveals Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a new mainline title in the series
Taking everyone by surprise, Capcom revealed a new mainline entry in the Onimusha series. Titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the game is set to release in 2026, but the hype is already through the roof. The last mainline installment was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, released in 2006 for the PS2. With Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the series will break a two-decade hiatus between mainline titles.
In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, players will cut through blood-soaked battles of intense swordplay while exploring the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, now shrouded in ominous clouds of Malice. Each stage will be steeped in the mystery, danger, and intrigue the series is celebrated for. The underworld monstrosities known as Genma will once again be the adversaries of this dark fantasy action game. Players will take on the role of a samurai wielding the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through grueling, visceral combat, he embarks on a journey to find his purpose. Together, players and the samurai will uncover the destiny that awaits him at the end of his path.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Announcement Trailer
The Onimusha series debuted in 2001, telling the story of a young warrior during a time of widespread conflict in feudal Japan. With the power of the Oni, he transforms into an Onimusha, taking on the evil Genma who seek to conquer the world. Featuring accurate historical figures and events woven into a dark fantasy setting, the trials and fates of its characters created a unique and gripping narrative that earned widespread acclaim. Building on this success, the series spawned several hit titles and even an original Netflix anime adaptation.
The last mainline game, Dawn of Dreams, was followed by a remaster of the original Onimusha: Warlords in 2018. However, the remaster reportedly saw lackluster sales, leading some pundits to believe Capcom had abandoned the franchise—until the company proved them wrong at The Game Awards 2024. Onimusha wasn’t the only Capcom IP to make a comeback either: the event closed with the announcement of an Okami sequel, directed by none other than Hideki Kamiya, the legendary industry veteran and director of the original Okami.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. While the release date may still be a long way off, it’s a perfect opportunity to start saving up for the launch.
