Nvidia's Smooth Motion feature is set to be available for RTX 40 series GPUs
With the launch of the GeForce 572.16 WHQL drivers for Windows PCs, Nvidia incorporated “Smooth Motion” support into their Nvidia App. This new functionality is currently exclusive to the RTX 50 series and can produce AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. This feature serves as Nvidia’s response to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology, and the company has announced that support for this capability will soon extend to RTX 40 series graphics cards.
Smooth Motion has the potential to add Frame Generation capabilities to games that do not support DLSS 3 (or later versions). This feature is compatible with games using DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. It can enhance the fluidity of games with framerate limitations or other titles that would benefit from increased framerates.

Previously, NVIDIA did not offer such a feature for its RTX GPU users, but now things are different as the company finally has an alternative to AFMF. The Smooth Motion technology adds an extra frame between two frames in games to improve gameplay smoothness. Games do not necessarily need to support DLSS to benefit from the additional frame, as it can be provided through a driver-based AI model.
Nvidia has indicated that Smooth Motion will be available for RTX 40 series GPUs with a “future update.” The feature requires additional time for validation and quality assurance before it can be rolled out for RTX 40 series GPUs.
Nvidia’s Jacob Freeman has stated that Smooth Motion will not match the quality of a native DLSS 3/4 game implementation. In comparison, Smooth Motion will experience higher latency and reduced image quality. Nonetheless, Smooth Motion is a beneficial feature for titles that lack support for native DLSS Frame Generation.
