Updates & Patches Events

The Frostpunk franchise is entering a new phase, with developer 11 bit studios confirming that the original Frostpunk will be released on the Nintendo Switch. The move brings the harsh, decision-driven city-building experience to a portable platform for the first time, widening its reach to a new audience of players.

Expanding the franchise in several ways

Since its debut, Frostpunk has carved out a distinct place in the strategy genre by blending resource management with moral dilemmas in a frozen, post-apocalyptic setting. Its transition to the Switch reflects sustained demand from fans who have long wanted to experience the game in a more flexible format. While a specific launch window has not yet been announced, the adaptation signals continued investment in the original title years after its release.

Meanwhile, Frostpunk 2 is evolving in a different direction, expanding beyond survival into the realm of politics and social control. Set decades after the first game, the sequel focuses on governing a larger, more complex society, where competing factions and ideological divides shape every decision.

A major part of that evolution is the upcoming DLC, Breach of Trust, scheduled for release in June 2026. The expansion introduces a new storyline set in New Edinburgh, where players must take charge after a collapse in leadership and attempt to restore order. Central to this scenario is a new "trust" system, forcing players to maintain political support or risk losing control entirely.

The DLC significantly builds on the sequel’s systems by introducing additional factions, each with their own agendas and demands. Managing these groups requires careful negotiation, lawmaking, and strategic alliances, adding further depth to the game's political system. Decisions carry greater weight, as unrest can quickly spiral if competing interests are not kept in balance.

Environmental challenges also take a new form in Breach of Trust. Instead of relying solely on the familiar frozen threats, the expansion introduces volcanic activity triggered by overuse of geothermal resources. This results in unpredictable disasters such as tremors and ash-filled storms, forcing players to rethink city planning and long-term survival strategies.

Beyond its core mechanics, the DLC adds new maps, structures, laws, and narrative events, along with expanded interactions with other settlements. Players can choose diplomatic cooperation, economic exploitation, or confrontation, further shaping the direction of their city.

Together, the Switch release of Frostpunk and the continued DLC rollout for its sequel highlight the studio’s long-term commitment to the series. As the franchise grows, it continues to refine its blend of survival mechanics and ethical decision-making, ensuring its place as one of the most distinctive strategy experiences in modern gaming.
