Hell is Us showcases investigation mechanics in new gameplay trailer

Nacon and developer Rogue Factor (Necromunda: Underhive Wars) have released a seven-minute gameplay video for the action RPG Hell is Us, highlighting its investigation mechanics. After showcasing the game's narrative at the latest PlayStation State of Play events, Rogue Factor's new project was further detailed during Nacon Connect with a narrated video by creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete.

The investigation mechanics in Hell is Us allow players to take complete control of their adventure, using observation skills, reasoning, and intuition to progress and uncover the secrets of the game's mysterious lands. Progression is guided by conversations with characters encountered along the way and a carefully designed level structure, creating an immersive experience. This game aspect aligns with the philosophy of player-plattering, empowering players to take charge of their journey. In fact, the video itself shows sequences of a secret that, according to the creative director, can be solved just by watching. Some players are already commenting on possible solutions, showing that the game's design is going in the right direction.

According to Jonathan, combat makes up only 50% of the experience, with the other half attributed to exploration. When interacting with NPCs, dialogue choices and an interface marker indicate which information the player has already gathered. The player doesn't even know an NPC's name until they interact with them, reinforcing the feeling of piecing everything together firsthand. Beyond character interactions, there are numerous puzzles and scattered information throughout the world of Hadea, catering to newcomers and more daring explorers.

As previously revealed in another gameplay video, Hell is Us won't feature a map, compass, or quest markers. However, a dedicated interface displays all collected investigations, including individuals' names, their locations and objectives. Ultimately, players must rely on their instincts to determine where to go, making discoveries at their own pace. Hell is Us will blend melee combat with exploration in a semi-open world devastated by a mysterious calamity that has given rise to supernatural creatures impervious to conventional weapons.

Hell is Us is set to launch on September 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.
