FIFA 22 may be the last game in the series

FIFA 22 may be the last game in the series

Electronic Arts is having a hard time securing a deal with FIFA for the rights of their popular sports video game series. The current deal comes to an end in 2022, and recent reports reveal that FIFA is asking for "more than double" to renew the license. FIFA 22 wouldn't be in danger, but it may become the last installment in the series as we know it if they don't sign up an agreement soon. The negotiation has been going on for a while, and now it's stalled. EA Sports has offered more money and wanted rights to explore additional ways of getting revenue, like digital products or tournaments, but it seems that FIFA would want to keep these rights.

Meanwhile, Electronic Arts has registered the EA Sports FC trademark, which may be a good hint about the future name of the popular sports series after FIFA 22. It is yet to be seen what kind of effect this would have on the fans, who are already spending lots of cash on Ultimate Team. Suppose EA Sports does not manage to secure an agreement. In that case, players may have to stop enjoying the thrill of playing in the official competitions, and it may even extend to national teams or some of the fan-favorite teams and players all over the globe. Konami is indeed doing rather well with the PES series despite not owning those rights, but they are still in the middle of a huge change moving to a free-to-play monetization model for eFootball. A third contender may appear and secure a deal for the rights with FIFA, but it's unlikely to happen due to the huge sum required.

We will know the final outcome in just a few months, but all this controversy does not mean that you shouldn't stop enjoying FIFA 22. It offers one of the best football experiences in the genre, with plenty of features that make the simulation as real as it gets.
