Square Enix reveals release date for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake
In celebration of Dragon Quest Day, which marks the release anniversary of the very first Dragon Quest in Japan on May 27, 1986, Square Enix quietly announced that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be released on October 30, 2025. The duology is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. Digital pre-orders start today.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake brings together full remakes of Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II, which take place chronologically after the events of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, released back in November 2024. Players will experience the dramatic and satisfying conclusion of the Erdrick Trilogy in these JRPGs, considered by many the progenitors of the genre. The remake version features the gorgeous HD-2D graphic style, as seen in Live A Live and Octopath Traveler, along with brand-new story content and gameplay improvements.

In Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, players take control of the descendants of Erdrick, the legendary hero whose legacy spans generations after the events of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Those already familiar with the series can continue this epic tale, while newcomers can experience the whole trilogy in its definitive form with the release of the digital Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection, which includes Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake along with Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake in a single bundle.
The Collector’s Edition of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is also available for pre-order, set to launch on October 30 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. The Collector’s Edition includes a physical copy of the game, character and monster blocks including six characters, a dog, two boss monsters and logo, several in-game items such as Ring of Strength, Slime Earrings and Mad Cap, two digital wallpapers, and the pre-order bonus, which Square Enix has yet to reveal.
At the moment, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is one of the few confirmed releases from Square Enix for the year. The closest one to launch is Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, a remaster of the first Bravely Default originally released for Nintendo 3DS, now coming to both Nintendo Switch 1 and 2. Besides the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dragon Quest XII and Kingdom Hearts IV are announced titles, but neither has a release window or further information.
So, if you’re a fan of Square Enix and its JRPGs, give Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake a shot. Pre-orders are now open, and, as always, you can check our comparator for the cheapest Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake deals and continue your adventure through the Erdrick trilogy.
