DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake Reveals New Content in Latest Trailer

DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake brings unexpected novelties

Whe haven't heard of the game since it was shown at a Nintendo Direct last march, but now Square Enix has released a brand-new trailer for DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake, highlighting that this upcoming release will be more than just a visual modernization of the classic RPGs. The video showcases fresh features, expanded content, and even some narrative surprises that promise to make the experience richer for both newcomers and series veterans.

A plethora of novelties

One of the biggest additions comes with Dragon Quest II, which introduces the Ocean Floor, a new region filled with unique monsters, treasures, and extra story content. The remake also integrates Sigils, originally exclusive to the second game, into both adventures, creating a stronger link between the two titles. Meanwhile, classic collectibles such as scrolls and Mini Medals return, allowing players to trade them for powerful items and equipment.

Character rosters are also being expanded. In Dragon Quest II, players will now be joined by the Princess of Cannock, turning the usual three-person party into a four-member team. On top of that, side activities like the Tombola minigame will provide lighthearted diversions, offering rewards for those who want to take a break from the main quest. The trailer further hints at refinements to combat and exploration, though Square Enix is holding back some details for later.

Narrative depth is another area getting a major overhaul. Producer Masaaki Hayasaka revealed that while the original scripts only contained tens of thousands of words, the remake will expand that to several million, greatly enriching character interactions and world-building. He also teased that long-time fans can expect a major twist by the end of Dragon Quest II, a surprise designed to be especially impactful for those who play through the entire Erdrick trilogy of remakes.

Overall, DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake will offer a blend of classic storytelling, modernized visuals, new characters, expanded regions, and a much deeper script to become the ultimate version of these legendary RPGs.

DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is scheduled for release on October 30, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, there is one caveat for Switch owners: progress and purchases will not transfer between the two Nintendo systems, meaning players who start on Switch and later upgrade will need to repurchase the game on Switch 2 if they want the enhanced version.
