Destiny 2: Renegades – Drifter's Crew Battles the Cabal Imperium
The upcoming major expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades, is set to be released on December 2, 2025. Developed and published by Bungie, this expansion will be available across multiple platforms, including PC via Steam, Epic Games, and the Xbox App, as well as on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game was heavily inspired by the Star Wars galaxy, emphasizing themes of lawlessness, bounty hunting, and forming an underdog crew.
Unraveling the Conflict: Drifter's Crew Faces the Cabal Imperium.
Destiny 2's storyline is segmented across many major expansions, beginning after the original game's "Red War" campaign, where the Last City was crippled and the Guardian lost their Light. The first major expansion was Forsaken, where the Guardian sought vengeance for the death of a beloved ally, Cayde-6, venturing into the lawless Tangled Shore and the mysterious, cursed Dreaming City. This was followed by Shadowkeep, which brought the player back to the Moon to confront eerie Nightmares of past enemies, uncovering a giant Pyramid ship, the vessel of the mysterious Darkness, lying dormant beneath the surface.
Beyond Light was the next chapter, where the Guardian travelled to the frozen moon of Europa to stop a Fallen Kell, Eramis, and for the first time, learned to wield the power of the Darkness in the form of the Stasis subclass. The story then entered a narrative high point with The Witch Queen, which focused on the Hive god Savathûn, who somehow managed to steal the Traveler's Light to create her own army of Hive Guardians, forcing the player to invade her mind-bending Throne World to uncover the truth and master the Light's power with the revamped Void subclass.
This led into Lightfall, where the Guardian traveled to the hidden, advanced city of Neomuna on Neptune, learning to wield the psychic Strand subclass to fight the Shadow Legion and the Witness's Tormentors in a desperate attempt to protect a key artifact, setting the stage for the final confrontation. The first major saga concluded with The Final Shape, where the Guardian, with their allies, pursued the Witness into the Pale Heart of the Traveler itself to stop the final destruction of the universe, introducing the Prismatic subclass, before The Edge of Fate expansion began the new, post-saga "Fate Saga" that now leads into Renegades.
The main storyline of Destiny 2: Renegades focuses on the Guardian defying the Vanguard's directives to follow the mysterious and morally gray character, the Drifter, across the Sol system's outer territories. Their mission is to infiltrate and build alliances within the criminal underworld's syndicates to gather resources and intelligence. The primary enemy is the newly introduced Barant Imperium, a powerful and highly disciplined Cabal faction that the Drifter suspects is linked to the enigmatic Nine and their secretive superweapon development. The Guardian must assemble a crew of outlaws and underdogs to challenge the Imperium, disrupt their operations, and uncover the truth behind the faction's connection to greater cosmic powers, all while balancing their own morality against the lawless demands of the Syndicates.
The Renegades expansion introduces a variety of new content, centered around the Tharsis Outpost, a new underground social space where players interact with various criminal Syndicates. The core endgame experience is the Lawless Frontier activity, where fireteams engage in high-risk jobs like bounty hunting and smuggling across contested territories, and this activity utilizes a Notoriety system where building reputation with the Syndicates unlocks powerful upgrades and special Renegade Abilities, such as calling in airstrikes, deploying turrets, or securing vehicle support.
Players will also gain access to the new Blasters weapon archetype, a class of heat-based firearms inspired by Star Wars that trade traditional reloading for an overheating mechanic that demands careful shot pacing. Additionally, a new customizable kinetic Exotic Sword, the Praxic Blade, heavily resembling a lightsaber with forgeable color variations, is available, and the expansion includes a new challenging three-player activity, the Equilibrium Dungeon, which offers a unique loot pool.
Ultimately, Destiny 2: Renegades is designed to completely immerse you in the fantasy of a highly skilled outlaw operating far outside the rules of the Vanguard. This translates directly into gameplay: you will constantly feel that palpable sense of lawlessness, defying established authority and engaging with morally gray factions, creating an atmosphere of danger and high-stakes risk-taking with every mission. At the same time, the new Blasters and Renegade Abilities translate directly into a feeling of sheer empowerment, driving chaotic, fun, and fast-paced co-op combat that establishes you as a versatile force on the Lawless Frontier. Finally, the focus on smuggling, bounty hunting, and forging your own unique Praxic Blade emphasizes a journey of genuine adventure and discovery, allowing you to build your own legendary reputation in the solar system's shadiest corners.
