A simple key makes Carnival Hunt stand out
Carnival Hunt may look like another entry in the increasingly crowded asymmetrical horror genre, but its wind-up key system gives every match a wonderfully tense identity of its own. Instead of simply copying the familiar “one monster versus a team of survivors” formula, Beer Night Studio has built the entire game around a single resource that controls sound, movement, survival and cooperation.
Players take the role of clockwork Bunnies trying to escape a deadly carnival while being hunted by a powerful Monster. Every character gradually loses charge, which means movement itself becomes something you have to manage. A Bunny that runs low cannot simply keep sprinting forever. Players need to find and use wind-up keys to stay active, but winding a toy creates noise, potentially revealing a hiding place to the Monster.
Every wind-up comes with a risk
That one decision creates a brilliant chain of stressful choices. Do you use a key immediately so you can keep moving, or save it for a teammate who is almost completely drained? Do you risk winding someone in a quiet room, knowing the sound could bring the hunter straight to your position? Even basic survival becomes a team discussion, especially when positional voice chat can also give away your plans.
The keys are not just batteries. They are effectively Carnival Hunt’s health packs, stamina bar, rescue system and team currency rolled into one. Teammates can share them, use them to activate mechanisms and help one another recover, while the Monster also depends on charge and can gain an advantage by capturing Bunnies and stealing their resources. Both sides are fighting over the same clockwork economy, which makes every chase feel connected to the larger match.
This helps Carnival Hunt stand apart from games that borrow heavily from Dead by Daylight without adding much beyond a new monster and a different map. Its first-person viewpoint, creepy puppet art and ability to hide among lifeless Bunny bodies already give it personality, but the winding mechanic is the real star.
Carnival Hunt still has the rough edges expected from an Early Access release, including balance and technical issues, yet its central idea is strong enough to keep players curious. When one tiny key can decide whether your whole team escapes or powers down in the dark, every match has the potential to become a proper horror story.
