Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora developers read the script for upcoming movies
Creating a licensed product is always a delicate situation. While the new creation must be consistent with the official representation, crafting something authentic beneath the existing works is necessary to capture the audience's attention. This situation becomes even more complex when your licensed product is an ongoing entity, like the Avatar franchise.
When Ubisoft began producing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the second Avatar film, "The Way of Water," had not yet been released. Because of this, the developers at Massive Entertainment had access to the script of this film, as well as future films, to ensure that no gaming ideas clashed with those of James Cameron. Game director Magnus Jensen revealed this in an interview with ComicBook.
"For us to be able to properly fit into the timeline -- because we started work on this game before Avatar: The Way of Water was out -- yeah, we had access to the script, not just to Avatar: The Way of Water, but some upcoming movies as well. Various amounts, of course," said Jensen. "And there's a couple of reasons for that. First, the most important reason is that, you know, we need to fit right in. We need to go there, we need to sort of gel and feel like it's part of the same world. There's a second very practical reason as well. As we pitch cool new set pieces and cool new story twists, or whatever, we don't want to cannibalize on each other, as well."
Jensen also states that players will encounter various Easter eggs throughout the exploration. Additionally, the game may include elements that may appear in future saga installments. However, the game is not directly connected to any of the films.
As seen in the official story trailer, in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, you will play as a Na'vi who was abducted as an infant by the RDA and trained in The Ambassador Program (TAP) to serve human interests on Pandora. You were put into emergency cryosleep but woke up 15 years later, finally free from the RDA but lost and unfamiliar with your home world.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an upcoming open-world action-adventure game based on the Avatar film series developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. While some players who have previewed it claim the game is a reskinned version of Far Cry 6, others say it has enough mechanics and features to hold its own. The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on December 7, 2023. You can check our comparator for the best prices on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
