AMD to launch RDNA 4 GPUs in early 2025, promising exceptional gaming performance
During the Q3 2024 earnings call, AMD's CEO confirmed the shift to the new Radeon GPU lineup, which is anticipated to be named the Radeon RX 8000 series. Nevertheless, considering AMD's recent changes, a different naming convention might also be introduced. The forthcoming RDNA 4 GPUs will offer significant enhancements, especially in ray tracing and AI functionalities.
Lisa Su, AMD's CEO, stated: "In Gaming Graphics, revenue has decreased year-over-year as we prepare for our next-gen Radeon GPUs utilizing the RDNA 4 architecture. Alongside a notable boost in gaming performance, RDNA 4 provides drastically improved ray tracing capabilities and introduces new AI features. We are on schedule to unveil the initial RDNA 4 GPUs in early 2025."

The RDNA 4 architecture from AMD has already been showcased in the SoC designed for the PS5 Pro, demonstrating enhanced ray tracing performance and PSSR AI Upscaling. While DLSS and XeSS utilize tensor cores for AI operations, AMD has been enhancing its FSR and Fluid Motion Frames technologies with AI, ensuring improved and more consistent image quality with the newly introduced AI features.
AMD has indicated that their RDNA 4 GPUs will not rival Nvidia in the ultra-high-end market. However, Su’s assertions of “a substantial increase in gaming performance” imply that RDNA 4 could outperform the existing RX 7900 XTX. Although we don’t anticipate a RTX 5090 competitor, robust RDNA 4 products should still be forthcoming. We expect AMD to unveil its RDNA 4 graphics architecture at CES 2025. The GPUs are likely to be available in January 2025, positioning them to launch ahead of Nvidia’s RTX 50 series alternatives.
To keep pace with new Intel and AMD releases in the mainstream segment, NVIDIA might need to hasten its mid-range RTX 50 solutions or consider price reductions on current offerings.
