There will be no BlizzCon this year
An official blog post by BlizzCon executive producer Saralyn Smith gave us some insight into the celebration of BlizzCon 2020. COVID-19 is a big concern and Blizzard was considering other possibilities. After all, Blizzard's convention is one of the most popular events in the world of video games due to the huge popularity of its games. Although World of Warcraft can be considered the center of the event, every single one of Blizzard's franchises seems to have been touched by a magic wand and all of them have quite a lot of followers. But the huge amount of participants is exactly what's generating doubts about the celebration of the event.
One month later, the cancellation of BlizzCon 2020 is finally official and, although it makes all sense not to assume the risk of gathering thousands of people in the same location even if security measures are applied, this will be quite discouraging for all the fans that expected to attend to the event. Every year there are a lot of people that even buy a virtual BlizzCon ticket just to receive part of the digital rewards that are given to the participants. those usually include exclusive pets for World of Warcraft, customization items for Diablo III, and even skins for Overwatch among other things.
On the good side of things, it's not like if the fans are going to be left without any kind of event, and Blizzcon organizers are already trying to come up with some type of online event that will satisfy the fans. You could say that it is almost necessary, because there are some eSport competitions that take place during the BlizzCon which have been completely left in the air with the cancellation.
We are sure that there will be some kind of virtual BlizzCon event but we have no clue about when it will happen and what kind of contents it will have. It's quite likely that we have some news about Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 during the event, and with the upcoming release of Shadowlands expansion this year, we may have some announcement about the future of World of Warcraft too. We will have to wait a bit longer to see what Blizzard pulls from under the sleeve.
