    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Explain the 'Guardian' technology and how it differs from conventional technology found in the game. How does acquiring and using this technology affect gameplay?
Guardian technology is a unique type of tech found in Elite Dangerous, left behind by an ancient alien race. It differs significantly from conventional human technology. It requires players to undertake specific missions, solve puzzles, and gather materials to unlock and utilize, affecting gameplay by granting access to powerful modules, weapons, and ships not otherwise available.
Describe the process of 'Engineering' ship modules. What are the trade-offs involved, and how does it influence player ship customization?
Engineering is the process of modifying ship modules using resources acquired from various sources in the game. Players can improve or alter the stats of their modules, such as weapons, shields, and thrusters, often with trade-offs like increased power consumption or decreased effectiveness in other areas. This profoundly influences ship customization, allowing players to create specialized builds.
What is 'Thargoid' combat like, and how does it differ from fighting other human players or AI controlled ships? What unique strategies and equipment are required?
Thargoid combat is a distinct combat type against alien, highly advanced foes. Unlike conventional combat, it requires specialized weapons, ships, and tactics. Thargoids have unique weaknesses, such as specific weapon types, and their combat is often a coordinated effort due to their formidable strength.
How does the 'Bounty Hunting' mechanic work, and how does it contribute to the player's reputation and influence within the game's factions and the galactic community?
Bounty Hunting involves tracking down and destroying ships with active bounties on them. Players collect the bounty as a reward. Success in Bounty Hunting affects a player's reputation with the controlling faction of the system where the bounties are claimed, and it can impact the player's standing with the larger galactic community.
Explain the concept of 'Exploration' in Elite Dangerous, and what unique challenges and rewards are associated with it?
Exploration involves charting the galaxy, scanning celestial bodies, and discovering new systems and anomalies. It offers a sense of discovery, with rewards including exploration data that can be sold for profit. Challenges include long travel times, the need for advanced scanners, and the dangers of hazardous environments like neutron star fields and black holes.
How do players participate in 'Galactic Events' or 'Community Goals', and what are the benefits of doing so?
Galactic Events and Community Goals are player-driven activities with specific objectives set by the game developers or the player community. Players contribute by completing tasks like trading, mining, or combat. Benefits often include substantial rewards, faction reputation boosts, and the potential to influence the game's narrative.
What is the 'Powerplay' system, and how does it impact player interactions and gameplay?
Powerplay is a faction-based system where players pledge allegiance to a specific power (a faction) and participate in activities to expand their influence and territory. This can involve undermining rival powers, expanding into new systems, and engaging in political intrigue. It shapes player interactions through PvP and competition.
Describe the 'Mining' gameplay loop. What resources can be extracted, and what specialized equipment is necessary for efficient mining?
Mining in Elite Dangerous involves locating, extracting, and selling valuable resources from asteroids and planetary surfaces. Players use specialized equipment such as mining lasers, prospecting limpets, and refinery modules. A variety of resources can be extracted, from common metals to rare minerals essential for crafting and engineering.
How does the 'Crime and Punishment' system work in Elite Dangerous, and what consequences do players face for breaking the law?
The Crime and Punishment system governs player actions in the game. Committing crimes, such as attacking other players, firing on stations, or carrying illegal cargo, results in fines, bounties, and potentially hostile encounters with authorities. Repeated offenses can lead to imprisonment, ship destruction, and negative faction standings, impacting gameplay and restricting access to certain areas.
