The world is large, but the elements in it appear quite often. Many of the locations will be familiar to you after a while and that will allow you to muster a somewhat safer defense against the zombies.
You can play the game offline as well as with other players in a drop-in multiplayer mode. Having someone to rely on in a situation such as this can be the difference between life and death.
