Valve kickstarts Steam Controller modding with free CAD file release
Valve is already embracing the modding scene for its newly released Steam Controller by publishing official CAD files for both the gamepad and the controller puck. This move makes it significantly easier for modders and accessory makers to design custom add-ons, effectively opening the door to a new wave of community-driven creations.
The Steam Controller launched earlier this week at $99 / £85 / €99, but demand was so high that it sold out almost immediately. Unlike traditional controllers, Valve’s design stands out with dual square trackpads for mouse-like precision, along with a multifunctional puck that acts as both a magnetic charging dock and a wireless receiver.
Despite its advanced functionality, the controller’s default matte black look is fairly understated. Valve seems to be leaning on the community to change that. By releasing CAD files on GitLab under a Creative Commons license, the company is giving users free access to detailed STP and STL models. These can be used to create custom shells, controller stands, protective cases, or even ergonomic grip modifications - many of which can be produced using a 3D printer.
That said, Valve has made it clear that any damage caused by modifications won’t be covered under warranty, so users experimenting with hardware changes should proceed carefully. The company also plans to release CAD files for its upcoming Steam Machine, which is designed with modding in mind thanks to features like a removable front panel.
For creators and hobbyists, this is a big opportunity. From fully customized controller housings to unique docks and accessories, the possibilities are wide open. It’s also particularly useful for 3D printing enthusiasts, who can print a replica shell to test ergonomics before buying - or create their own accessories after purchase.
