Star Wars Zero Company will feature a linear campaign
When Star Wars Zero Company was first revealed, plenty of strategy fans immediately drew comparisons to XCOM. That's hardly surprising, considering the game is being developed by Bit Reactor, a studio packed with former Firaxis veterans. But as more details emerge, it's becoming increasingly clear that this isn't trying to be XCOM 3 with lightsabers. Instead, Star Wars Zero Company is carving out for itself an identity that's far more focused on telling a single, carefully crafted Star Wars story.
Linear campaign
Bit Reactor has confirmed that Star Wars Zero Company will feature a completely linear campaign from start to finish. Players can expect a 30 to 40-hour adventure with no branching storylines, no alternate endings, no romance options, and no New Game Plus waiting at the finish line. Every player will follow the same overarching narrative, with the emphasis placed on tactical encounters and squad-building rather than rewriting galactic history.
That may sound restrictive in an era where RPGs often advertise dozens of endings and relationship systems, but it's a deliberate creative choice. Rather than spreading its resources across countless narrative permutations, the studio wants to deliver a cinematic campaign where every mission builds toward a specific conclusion. Your decisions on the battlefield will still matter, but don't expect conversations to send the story careening down wildly different paths. This is something that is not strange to games in the Star Wars franchise. After all, the most famous sci-fi universe offers plenty of possibilities but Lucasfilm always has a lot to say about what's allowed or not. Therefore, releasing a controlled and deliberately limited experience that tells a specific Star Wars story totally makes sense.
If that announcement raised a few eyebrows, the next revelation might have strategy veterans reaching for their thermal detonators. Bit Reactor has also confirmed that Star Wars Zero Company will not launch with official mod support. The developers emphasized that they have enormous respect for the modding community, but supporting custom content simply wasn't something they could prioritize while building the game.
It's a decision that immediately puts Star Wars Zero Company in a different level than XCOM 2, a game that has remained astonishingly relevant nearly a decade after release thanks to its thriving modding scene. For many players, XCOM 2 is more a platform than a strategy game. The community has created everything from new soldier classes and enemy factions to massive gameplay overhauls, quality-of-life improvements, and even full Star Wars conversions. Every campaign can feel like a brand-new experience.
That's where Star Wars Zero Company takes a very different route. Instead of becoming a sandbox that evolves with its community, Bit Reactor appears intent on delivering a polished, self-contained tactical adventure. Once you've completed the campaign, your next playthrough may involve experimenting with different squad compositions or combat strategies, but the galaxy itself won't change around you.
Longevity vs impact
Some players have grown weary of sprawling games that seem designed to last forever, offering endless replayability at the expense of pacing. A focused 30-hour campaign with a clear beginning, middle, and end can be just as satisfying, especially in a universe where strong storytelling has always been one of Star Wars' greatest strengths.
Still, the absence of official modding could have the biggest impact long after launch. While a memorable campaign can earn critical acclaim, mod support often determines whether a strategy game remains part of the conversation years later. Without an easy way for the community to create new missions, mechanics, or characters, Star Wars Zero Company may shine brightly at release but struggle to maintain the same enduring legacy that keeps XCOM 2 installed on so many hard drives.
For now, Bit Reactor seems comfortable with that trade-off. Rather than building a galaxy of endless possibilities, the studio is inviting players on one carefully plotted mission. It may not be the most replayable trip through the Star Wars universe, but if the campaign sticks the landing, it could prove that sometimes the best stories don't need alternate timelines or a thousand community-made Stormtrooper helmets to leave a lasting impression.
In any case, we won't have to wait much longer to know more. The release of the game is scheduled for next month, and you can check out the best deals for Star Wars Zero Company with our comparator already if the game interest you.
