Sony’s patented AI system could detect problems and fix devices itself
Sony may be exploring a way for PlayStation consoles to troubleshoot their own software issues without requiring players to contact customer support. A newly reported patent describes an AI-powered system that could monitor connected devices, identify problems, generate custom diagnostic firmware, and potentially deploy the resulting fix directly to an affected console.
As reported by TweakTown, citing patent aggregator Patentlyze, the proposed system would rely on an AI server that continuously monitors connected PlayStation hardware for potential software problems. When an issue is detected, the model could generate firmware specifically designed to diagnose or resolve that particular problem, rather than relying entirely on a collection of predefined troubleshooting procedures.
The system could then determine whether the problem is suitable for an automated fix or requires human intervention. If the AI decides that it can handle the issue itself, the generated software would be sent to the affected console, potentially eliminating support tickets, warranty claims, and lengthy troubleshooting sessions.

On paper, that could make dealing with software problems considerably easier. However, allowing an AI model to generate and deploy firmware also introduces some obvious risks. Large language models can produce incorrect or unexpected output, and a faulty firmware update could potentially leave a console in a worse state than it was before the repair. Instead of fixing a minor software bug, an improperly generated patch could potentially render the hardware unusable and ultimately require a replacement.
Security would be another major concern. The proposed setup would create a pipeline connecting an AI system to potentially sensitive console software, with the ability to generate and distribute code remotely. A compromised server or vulnerability in the deployment process could therefore have serious consequences.
For now, though, this remains a patent rather than an announced PlayStation feature. Sony has not confirmed that the technology will ever be implemented in a consumer console, and there is no indication of when such a system could become available. If Sony does eventually pursue the concept, extensive safeguards would likely be necessary before an AI system could be trusted to generate and install firmware without direct human oversight.
