AMD unveils the quicker Ryzen 7 9850X3D, built for top-tier gaming

Ryzen 7 9850X3D is coming soon, boosting speeds while keeping its cache

AMD has made updates on its website mentioning an upcoming gaming CPU named the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This supports earlier leaks about a scheduled Zen 5 X3D refresh from AMD. This refresh is said to introduce two new gaming CPUs, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D2.

Speculation has been circulating for some time suggesting this possibility, and it is believed that the Ryzen 9850X3D may achieve a boost speed of 5.6GHz, which is 400MHz higher than the current Ryzen 9800X3D—this represents a significant increase. The other specifications of the 9850X3D are expected to be similar to those of its slightly lesser counterpart.

That said, the launch is still theoretical until we receive confirmation regarding the Ryzen 9850X3D, but, as noted by Olrak on X (via VideoCardz), there is a listing for drivers and downloads related to this 3D V-Cache CPU on AMD’s French website. It seems unlikely that such an error occurred if AMD wasn’t planning to release the Ryzen 9850X3D soon, but we cannot consider this definitive proof that the processor is ready for launch.

Should you hold off on buying a CPU for your gaming PC and wait for the rumored Ryzen 9850X3D, or is it better to purchase the Ryzen 9800X3D now, especially if you can find a good deal?

The short answer is no, you shouldn't wait. The Ryzen 9800X3D is still an outstanding gaming processor. Crucially, we have no confirmed release timeline for the Ryzen 9850X3D. While there are rumors suggesting an unveiling at CES 2026, this is unconfirmed speculation. Even if it is announced at CES, the actual availability and initial stock levels could be a long way off, especially considering the likely high demand for this new chip.

Given that the additional 400MHz of boost is a relatively minor improvement (especially at 4K), it probably won’t justify the extra cost - even with the potential long wait if initial supply is limited for the 9850X3D. There are simply too many uncertainties, so if you’re currently building a gaming PC and searching for an outstanding processor to pair with a powerful GPU, just opt for the 9800X3D. You won’t be let down. Utilize our price comparison tool to find the best deals on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU today.
