RTX 5090D V2 Cancellation in China Likely After US Policy Shift
Easing US export restrictions is enabling AMD and Nvidia to restart shipments of their MI308 and H20 AI accelerators to China. Consequently, the future of Nvidia's forthcoming RTX 5090 D v2 is now in doubt. Nvidia might decide against launching its RTX 5090 D v2 graphics card, as the relaxed US export mandates could let Nvidia reintroduce its original RTX 5090 D graphics card.
The RTX 5090 D v2 is a GPU designed to comply with the latest US export laws. In short, it is the most potent graphics card Nvidia can manufacture while still being exportable to China. Reports suggest that it has specifications similar to the initial RTX 5090 D, but it comes with 24GB of GDDR7 memory rather than 32GB, significantly reducing the GPU's maximum memory bandwidth.

Should Nvidia be able to resume shipments of the RTX 5090 D, the V2 version may no longer be necessary. That said, the GPU might already be in production. This could imply that the V2 could become available for purchase, albeit for a limited time. Essentially, Nvidia could sell this GPU to clear its inventory, then replace it with RTX 5090 D GPUs once they are back in stock.
Another possibility is that Nvidia might proceed with its plans to launch the RTX 5090 D v2 and not bring back its original RTX 5090 D. With its reduced memory specifications, Nvidia's new V2 GPU will likely be simpler and cheaper to manufacture. If Nvidia can keep pricing for the RTX 5090 D in line with its new V2 models, there would be little incentive to reintroduce its older, pricier 32GB versions.
While the RTX 5090 sets a new benchmark for peak performance, top-tier power isn't the only option on the market. The RTX 5080 boasts impressive next-generation features, ultra-fast ray tracing, and DLSS 4 support—all at a more budget-friendly price. Whether you're building a high-end rig or upgrading your current system, the RTX 5080 delivers premium gaming and creative capabilities at an accessible price.
