Everything you need to know about the GTA 6 story and characters

GTA 6 story, characters and setting: Everything confirmed so far

At its heart, Grand Theft Auto VI is a love story with a criminal streak. Rockstar’s senior VP of narrative, Rupert Humphries, calls it a Bonnie and Clyde-type tale, and that’s the best way to understand the game. It follows two people, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, who decide they’re better off facing the world together.

Jason grew up surrounded by grifters and crooks. He joined the Army hoping to leave a troubled youth behind, but he ended up in the Keys doing what he knows best: working for local drug runners. All he really wants is an easy life. Somehow, though, things keep getting harder.

Lucia, on the other hand, has been fighting her whole life. Her father taught her to throw punches almost as soon as she could walk, and fighting for her family eventually landed her in Leonida Penitentiary. Only luck got her out. Now she’s chasing the good life her mother has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City, and this time she’s willing to take matters into her own hands. For her, a life with Jason might be the way out.

Of course, nothing goes to plan. When an easy score goes wrong, the pair end up on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the whole state. From that moment on, they can only count on each other.

Welcome to Leonida

The story unfolds in Vice City, and it’s the modern-day version rather than the neon-soaked 1980s visuals longtime fans remember. Beyond the city limits, the state of Leonida stretches out across five more regions: the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Along the way, Jason and Lucia cross paths with characters like Brian Heder, an old-school Keys smuggler who lets Jason live rent-free in return for favours, and Raul Bautista, a smooth bank robber always looking for fresh talent.

Since there are two protagonists, you get to play as both. You can keep them together as a couple, or split them up and let each cause chaos on their own. In the middle of a getaway, for instance, one can drive while the other leans out to shoot. That said, you can’t swap whenever you like: Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson has explained that the story decides when switching is available.

As for who is really pulling the strings behind the conspiracy, and how Jason and Lucia’s story ends, Rockstar has left that for players to discover.

When it comes to the release, Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading opens a week early, on November 12.

As for editions, Rockstar keeps it simple, with just two. The Standard Edition is the full game. The Ultimate Edition adds an exclusive collection of vehicles, weapons, outfits, shops and extra action, and these extras aren’t handed over all at once: they’re unlocked gradually as you progress through each chapter of Jason and Lucia’s story. If you start with the Standard Edition, you can buy the Ultimate content later as a separate upgrade.

On top of that, early buyers of either edition get the Vintage Vice City Pack, a set of throwback items inspired by the city’s neon heyday. It includes:

  • a classic ‘55 Vapid Stanier
  • the Shore Court garage
  • retro outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia
  • a tropical weapon pattern

Whichever edition you choose, the trip to Leonida starts the same way. Before you jump in, use our price comparison tool to find the best deal on Grand Theft Auto VI across trusted stores.
