GROUND BRANCH 1.0 arrives with two missions and plenty of backlash
GROUND BRANCH has finally crossed the 1.0 finish line after almost eight years in Steam Early Access, but its big moment has not exactly gone according to plan. The hardcore tactical shooter launched its full version on July 16, 2026, only to see its recent Steam rating drop to “Mostly Negative,” with just 34% of recent reviews marked positive shortly after release.
That reaction is especially striking because GROUND BRANCH has spent years building something tactical-shooter fans rarely get: an absurdly detailed operator and weapon-customization system. Players can position optics, lasers, grips and other attachments directly along a weapon’s rails, while also arranging pouches and equipment across their vest and belt. These choices are not purely cosmetic either. Carrying too much gear affects stamina, placing a scope badly can reduce visibility, and bringing a long rifle into a tiny room can make turning corners much more awkward.
Built by a tactical shooter veteran
The game was originally created at BlackFoot Studios, founded in 2004 by John Sonedecker. He previously worked as one of the lead artists on the original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games, helping shape the slower and more methodical tactical-shooter style that GROUND BRANCH is clearly trying to revive.
Version 1.0 does add plenty of meaningful improvements. Enemy AI has been reworked, functional body armor has arrived, doors and breaching have been updated, and the map selection now includes new locations, major remakes and overhauled environments. The release also adds Extraction, new weapons and equipment, improved animations, selectable moon phases and a refreshed Operations campaign framework.
Unfortunately, that campaign framework is also where the disappointment begins. The supposedly full release currently offers only a two-mission Prologue, Onyx Flame and Gilded Arrow. Both can be tackled alone or in online co-op, but friendly squad AI is unavailable and will not return until the planned Chapter 1 update. After such a long Early Access period, many players understandably expected 1.0 to feel more complete rather than like another foundation for future content.
GROUND BRANCH is still an impressively deep tactical sandbox, especially for groups that enjoy planning loadouts, coordinating breaches and arguing over exactly where an optic should sit. However, its launch proves that a 1.0 label creates expectations that detailed gunsmithing alone cannot satisfy.
