Galvatein Offers a Fresh Perspective Beyond Being the Hero
Fantasy games usually focus on the adventure that begins after a hero accepts a quest and walks out of the guild. Galvatein: Adventurers' Guild stays behind the counter instead. BLANBEE's game entered Early Access on September 22 and casts you as a receptionist on the continent of Eustace, where each workday revolves around welcoming returning adventurers and figuring out whether their stories actually match the quests they claim to have completed.
A "Papers, Please"-Style Shift in the Middle of a Fantasy World
At heart, Galvatein blends simulation, deduction puzzles, and visual novel storytelling. Rather than entering a dungeon and completing a quest yourself, you sit behind a desk and piece together what happened from the information other people bring back.
Quest givers may only have a vague memory of the monster they encountered, so you need to study their descriptions, consult the bestiary, check maps and licenses, and inspect the loot brought back by adventurers. The wrong fang, a location that does not add up, or a suspicious answer can be enough to send an entire case back under review.
That is where much of Galvatein's charm comes from. Monsters, dungeons, loot, and grand adventures are all still part of the fantasy, but you rarely experience them firsthand. Instead, every expedition returns to the guild as a story, a piece of evidence, or an item that needs to be verified. It is easy to see why players have compared the game to "Papers, Please", only with a lighter tone and a colorful anime fantasy setting.
Thankfully, the people standing on the other side of the counter are more than walking paperwork. Galvatein is divided into chapters, each centered on different events and characters. There is an elf who leaves the Forest of the World Tree after losing the ability to use mana, and a dwarf who used to be a blacksmith but becomes an adventurer because he is... afraid of fire. At first, you question them simply to verify a quest. The more you talk, however, the more their personalities, circumstances, and personal problems begin to surface.
This is also where the visual novel side becomes more important. The 2D anime presentation gives the characters and conversations plenty of room to breathe, while the document-checking puzzles keep you actively thinking instead of simply reading dialogue. Sometimes following the rules is the easy part; things become much more complicated once you understand why an adventurer could not do everything exactly as the paperwork demanded.
When evening arrives, Galvatein changes pace with its monster cuisine system. Loot can become cooking ingredients, but each one has its own quirks: Slimes are extremely sticky, Giant Bees are poisonous, and throwing everything into the same pot is unlikely to end well. It works both as a break from your daytime shift and as another opportunity to spend time with the adventurers you met earlier.
The Early Access version currently contains six chapters, including the tutorial, representing roughly half of the content BLANBEE plans for the finished game. The developer intends to add more chapters, endings, gameplay mechanics, and visual improvements on the road to version 1.0.
That makes Galvatein: Adventurers' Guild particularly easy to recommend to players who prefer deduction and character-driven stories over combat. The “Papers, Please in a fantasy guild” idea is an immediate hook, but what gives it more staying power is the way puzzle solving, simulation, and visual novel storytelling turn every case file into a window onto the person standing across the counter.
