Apple users gain a new way to play PC games with windowed SteamOS
SteamOS has become one of the most appealing ways to play PC games, largely thanks to Valve's work on the Steam Deck and its expanding hardware ecosystem. Now, an open-source project is bringing the Linux-based operating system to Apple Silicon Macs, potentially giving Mac owners another way to access a much larger gaming library.
Known as FX Steam Launcher, the project is available on GitHub and remains under active development. YouTuber ETA PRIME recently tested it on an Apple MacBook Pro equipped with an M4 Max chip and 32GB of unified memory, demonstrating several demanding PC games running at surprisingly playable frame rates.
The project builds on the Arm-based version of SteamOS developed for Valve's Steam Frame headset. Rather than replacing macOS, FX Steam Launcher runs SteamOS inside a virtual machine, either in a window or full screen. This allows users to switch between the two environments without disrupting their existing macOS installation.
Getting everything working requires several layers of translation. The SteamOS interface is presented through native Apple Metal windows, with support for resolutions ranging from the Steam Deck's 800p output to 4K and ultrawide 21:9 formats. A dedicated controller framework handles different gamepads, including Xbox and DualSense controllers, while also supporting features such as vibration. Audio is handled through a separate layer.
The more complicated work happens when games are running. Proton uses DXVK to translate DirectX instructions into Vulkan, which is then handled by Vulkan-to-Metal solutions such as KosmicKrisp Metal 4 and MoltenVK. Since Apple Silicon uses Arm processors while most PC games are designed for x86 hardware, FEX also translates x86 instructions into Arm64 code on the fly. SteamOS itself runs inside the virtual machine rather than being fully emulated.
Despite this complicated setup, the results are encouraging. The Witcher 3 reportedly runs above 70 FPS at 1080p on the M4 Max, although some visual issues remain, particularly with trees. Left 4 Dead 2 exceeds 100 FPS, while Fallout 4 reaches around 60 FPS. Rockstar's original Red Dead Redemption also manages more than 70 FPS after shader compilation, although some stuttering occurs.
FX Steam Launcher's official website also tracks real-world gaming results submitted by users, including performance figures, hardware configurations, playtime, and installation counts. With regular updates improving compatibility and performance, the project could become an interesting alternative for Mac owners who want to explore PC gaming beyond the titles available natively on macOS.
