Mahou Arms is a colourful battle against an alien invasion
Mahou Arms throws players into a world where humanity is barely holding on. Earth has been devastated by an alien force known as the Locks, and conventional armies are no longer enough to stop them. The last line of defence is GARDA, a military organisation that sends magically powered fighters into battle against the invasion.
Players take on the role of GARDA’s commander and follow the story of Amelia and Susan, two magical girls with very different personalities and fighting styles. The game moves between large-scale battles, quieter character moments and personal missions that reveal more about the team. This gives the story some welcome breathing room, letting the characters feel like more than weapons sent out to clear another battlefield.
Anime drama meets fast-paced action
Fans of NieR: Automata may recognise the mix of anime-inspired science fiction, emotional storytelling and fast third-person action. Mahou Arms has a much smaller scope, but it aims for a similar balance between dramatic story scenes and flashy fights against strange mechanical enemies.
Combat is where the game is at its most entertaining. Amelia and Susan each have their own attacks, abilities and movement styles, making it fun to switch between them and experiment with different combinations. New skills and spells gradually expand their movesets, while dodging, chaining attacks and launching powerful abilities can make battles feel wonderfully chaotic.
The campaign also keeps changing things up. Alongside standard combat missions, players encounter boss battles, cyberspace sections, drone races and rail-shooting sequences. Not every idea feels equally polished, but the variety helps the adventure avoid becoming a simple series of identical enemy arenas.
There is also a surprising amount of personality outside combat. Side quests and relationship-focused storylines offer more time with Amelia and Susan, while the colourful anime presentation creates an interesting contrast with the darker idea of a world already pushed close to defeat.
Mahou Arms still has a few rough edges, particularly when it comes to enemy balance and technical performance, but its ambition is easy to appreciate. It is a passionate action game filled with magical powers, alien monsters and plenty of over-the-top anime energy.
