Dark and Darker: Legendary Status is available for free today on the Epic Games Store

Another day, another free game on the Epic Games Store. Dark and Darker: Legendary Status, the FPS dungeon crawler/Battle Royale hybrid, is today's free game of the day, replacing Wizard of Legend from yesterday.

For those who may not be aware, the Epic Games Store typically provides a free game—or occasionally multiple free games—in a weekly giveaway every Thursday. During the holiday season, this rate increases to a free game every day until January 2. Since December 19, it has been following this schedule, resulting in a larger number of complimentary games for Epic Games Store users, but also only allowing 24 hours to claim each title before a new one takes its place.

Currently in Early Access, Dark and Darker is a unique dungeon crawling experience that focuses on PvPvE play. This means that players do battle not just against each other, but also the environment around them. This is a free-to-play title currently in early access, although this DLC typically retails for $30. By paying $30, players of Dark and Darker can upgrade from a free “Squire” account to “Legendary” status, unlocking additional features that can be explored further here.

You and your party will work together to obtain weapons, armor, and important upgrades while you attempt to escape the dungeon alive. But you're not alone, as you also have to endure the attacks from like-minded parties trying to escape. It's a unique twist on the Battle Royale genre that conjures feelings of tabletop RPG campaigns.

Dark and Darker has faced its share of controversy. In 2023, it was removed from Steam following copyright infringement allegations by Nexon, claiming the game shared similarities with another title in development at Nexon. The case was dismissed later that year, allowing the game to return to digital storefronts.
