Crown of Hispania rewrites the Reconquista in Early Access

Crown of Hispania offers a different take on medieval grand strategy
Early access

The medieval grand strategy genre has no shortage of enormous maps and campaigns capable of consuming hundreds of hours. Crown of Hispania takes a more focused approach than other games. It's developer, Regalis Studio, has turned its attention to one of medieval Europe's most turbulent regions: 11th-century Iberia.

Crown of Hispania was released in Early Access on September 22, 2026, and allows players to reshape the political landscape of the Iberian Peninsula. The game already features more than 300 provinces, alongside systems that cover warfare, economics, technology, population, characters, courts and diplomacy.

A grand strategy game built around medieval Iberia

Crown of Hispania features a campaign that begins in a fragmented Iberian Peninsula where Christian kingdoms and Muslim powers compete for territory and influence. Iberia is the main focus of the game, and that narrower scope allows the developers to give greater attention to individual provinces and their geography. In the game, terrain influences both economics and and warfare, while the political situation provides plenty of opportunities to navigate through an alternate version of the Reconquista. The historical setting acts as a starting point and a backgroung in an experience that lets you create your own path, which may differ from those taken by historical rules.

Crown of Hispania offers a distinctive approach to warfare, as armies can move freely across the map. This allows players to take advantage of the terrain. Also, the size of an army influences its movement speed, adding another layer of complexity to your military campaigns in the game.

The provinces themselves can evolve during a campaign. Their population, religion and culture can change depending on player actions. A decission that may boost your growth in an specific field may have drawbacks that make your progress slower in other areas. This creates a series of trade-offs rather than reducing province development to a simple process of accumulating bonuses. These interconnected systems give the map a sense of progression. A territory you inherit at the beginning of a campaign does not necessarily have to look or function the same way several decades later.

Military expansion is only one way to strengthen a realm. Crown of Hispania also lets you handle technology, resources, urbanization, population management and diplomacy, forcing you to balance expansion with the development of your existing territories.

Diplomatic power limits the number of agreements a country can maintain, while AI-controlled kingdoms can form pacts and arrange dynastic marriages themselves. This means neighbouring powers continue developing their own political relationships rather than simply reacting to the player.

Between Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings

Players familiar with Europa Universalis IV will find similarities in the emphasis on territorial expansion, diplomacy, economic management and technological development. However, Crown of Hispania focuses on a smaller territory and uses that as an advantage to offer an even more detailed experience than a global sandbox. The game also incorporates several character-driven elements associated with Crusader Kings II. as rulers, families, courts and dynastic relationships are part of the political game. This combination gives Crown of Hispania a hybrid identity: state management and territorial warfare sit alongside the personal relationships and dynastic politics expected from a medieval strategy game.

Early Access is only the beginning

Crown of Hispania is still an Early Access project. Regalis Studio expects development to continue for at least 12 months, and plans to expand the game with intrigue and espionage, rebellions, expanded cultural and religious systems, further economic mechanics, new events and improved modding support. The developers are also using player feedback to refine existing mechanics.

By establishing a clear identity within the grand strategy genre, Crown of Hispania is aiming to claim its own space as a solid alternative for those players looking for an experience with a smaller-scope.
