Cross-play is coming to Overwatch soon

Blizzard seems to be looking to the future when it comes to its competitive FPS license, Overwatch. All of the information revealed during the last few months has been focused on the sequel, Overwatch 2, which will feature a certain number of novelties to the universe that the players know so well. The gameplay of Overwatch 2 was partially revealed last month, and it was received with mixed feelings, as many changes do not please the professional players.

But the first Overwatch will continue to be in the spotlight, at least for a while. Blizzard keeps adding content to the game and they have just announced that a major feature will be coming soon: cross-play. It's been on the table for a while, but now we have more details on how it will work.

Thanks to a developer post and an article that includes a F.A.Q on the official Overwatch website, we have learned that cross-play will be automatically activated by default, but following some rules. First of all, it will be available on all platforms, PC, Playstation 4 and 5; Xbox One and Series X/S; and Nintendo Switch. For console players, as long as they are not grouped with at least one PC player, matchmaking will only be with console players. It is possible to disable cross-play to have fun only with players from your platform, except on PC, where cross-play will be enabled at all times. For competitive game modes, console/PC cross-play will not be available. To take advantage of this new feature, console players will need to create a Battle.net account. PC players do not need to do anything, of course. As a bonus, a golden chest will be offered to all players who log into the game by the end of 2021.

Also, cross-platform progression will not be available at the launch of Overwatch cross-play, which is expected to arrive soon.
