Diablo Celebrates It's 30th Anniversary With The Warlock

Blizzard reveals the Warlock for Diablo's 30th Anniversary

Three decades have passed since a solitary hero first descended into the depths beneath Tristram, unknowingly launching a franchise that would shape the action RPG genre for generations. Marking this milestone, Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled an ambitious content roadmap designed to connect Diablo’s legacy with its future trajectory. At the center of the celebration stands the Warlock, a formidable new class set to appear in both Diablo IV and Diablo II: Resurrected, uniting the franchise's classic and contemporary eras.

A bountiful celebration

Diablo II: Resurrected – Reign of the Warlock

In a surprising announcement, Blizzard confirmed that Diablo II: Resurrected will receive its first entirely new class in twenty-five years. The Reign of the Warlock expansion represents a historic moment for the title, introducing a character archetype that straddles the moral and thematic boundary between holy zeal and infernal corruption. Unlike existing classes, this incarnation of the Warlock specializes in forbidden rites and manipulates powers long considered untouchable, offering veteran players a distinctly new approach to traversing Sanctuary's familiar acts.

The expansion extends beyond a single class addition. It delivers long-requested structural improvements, including integrated and customizable loot filters as well as expanded stash capacity, enhancements that address persistent community demands. Endgame systems have also been improved. Players will confront the Colossal Ancients, an encounter engineered to test even meticulously optimized builds. Meanwhile, expanded Terror Zones intensify the climb to Level 99, preserving the punishing progression curve that defines Diablo II's high-level play.

Diablo IV and the Lord of Hatred

While Diablo II: Resurrected looks backward to enrich its foundation, Diablo IV is preparing for a major forward leap with the Lord of Hatred expansion. In this iteration, the Warlock emerges as a vengeance-driven figure clad in chains and hellfire, functioning as a thematic counterpoint to the Paladin. Rather than resisting demonic forces, this class channels the essence of the Prime Evils themselves. Blizzard has announced a detailed gameplay showcase scheduled for March 5, 2026, which will examine the Warlock's distinctive resource systems and high-impact dark magic abilities.

The expansion introduces Skovos, an ancient region sculpted in marble and steeped in historical gravitas. Its capital, Temis, serves as a new social and narrative hub infused with Askari and Firstborn lore. Beyond environmental storytelling, Skovos anchors a redesigned endgame ecosystem. A new feature titled War Plans enables players to assemble customized rotations of activities such as Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons, effectively constructing personalized endgame loops tailored to specific gear objectives and preferred combat rhythms.

The anniversary update also reintroduces legacy mechanics with modern refinements. The Horadric Cube will return in Diablo IV as a cornerstone of endgame itemization, granting players the ability to transmute affixes and enhance item rarity tiers. Complementing the Cube there will be a new Talisman system that revives the spirit of Charms and set-based bonuses, deepening character optimization through layered stat customization.

Perhaps the most transformative change on the way is the overhaul of the Skill Tree across all classes. Regardless of expansion ownership, players will gain access to a broad spectrum of new tactical permutations. More than eighty additional skill variants allow abilities to be fundamentally reconfigured. This design philosophy shifts buildcrafting toward a sandbox paradigm, encouraging experimentation and destabilizing static meta strategies.

Honoring three decades of darkness

As the anniversary unfolds, Blizzard's strategy is evident: preserve the franchise’s foundational identity while systematically expanding its mechanical and narrative scope. The Warlock’s debut and the accompanying systemic innovations signal not merely a retrospective celebration, but a deliberate statement about Diablo’s next era.
